Default DEF error - 2016 XF 2.0 Diesel

Hi guys,

I'm hoping someone has seen this error before, and found a solution for it.

I've got a Jag XF 2.0 Diesel Portfolio (2016).
Recently I was driving to a meeting and my fuel level dropped low (was running late and I think there was sub 30 miles left in the tank). The DEF message came on saying wrong mix. Obviously filled up the fuel, but the error didn't go away. I topped up the AdBlue but the error changed to incorrect consistency, and now it says no restarts in 500 miles.

I've had it looked at by the local independent dealer who cleaned the sensor, changed the AdBlue and reset it, but the error has returned. My auto start stop has also stopped working, which isn't that big an issue for me as I'm doing motorway mileage mainly, but still would be useful to have it!

Anyone had a similar experience? What did you do? I'm tempted to buy a code reader and reset it myself, especially if it'll keep happening rather than paying the £80 every time to reset it. If you have recommendations for a reader, that'd also be appreciated.

Thanks for the help in advance!

AFAIK the engine will stop if the ECU considers it is near empty. This is to protect the fuel supply system. I'm not sure why you got the DEF message, though.
My auto stop/start stopped working in late 2019 and as I hate the things, I have not bothered fixing it. I have it on the MB SLK and its a bloody nuisance !

Thanks Fraser. I've got 200 miles + and no long journeys planned at the moment so I think I'm OK for now, but I do need a solution.
