MY2017 XF260 2.0d Prestige BUY OR NOT?
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for advice from owners/mechanics who know the Jaguar XF X260 20d (Ingenium 2.0 diesel) Australia well.
I’m considering a late 2017 build / MY18 XF 20d Prestige (RWD). It’s single-owner, very low kilometres for its age, appears well kept, and has full service history with no outstanding recall/campaign items per VIN check.
Inspector suggested: clear codes → do a decent warm drive (mixed/highway) → rescan to confirm nothing returns as current/pending.
Thanks in advance guys. I appreciate the support and knowledge.

Pre-purchase inspection findings (mobile inspection + scan)
The car drives well and the inspector noted:- Smooth running, no obvious knocks/rattles on test drive
- No timing chain rattle on cold start
- Suspension bushes visually OK
- Brake rotors visually OK
- Minor cosmetic hairline marks only
- Tyres are ~9 years old (safety risk) → replacement recommended immediately (seller says they’re willing to replace).
- Rear brake pads close to replacement (rotors look OK).
- Historic fault codes recorded (not active at time of inspection) that appear related to emissions/engine management:
- Historic NOx / EGR-related entries
- One historic cooling fan control circuit entry (not active during inspection)
- Also several historic comms/module-type codes, potentially linked to low-voltage events (scanner showed around ~11.9V during scanning).
- Historic NOx / EGR-related entries
Inspector suggested: clear codes → do a decent warm drive (mixed/highway) → rescan to confirm nothing returns as current/pending.
What I’m trying to understand (risk vs normal diesel behavior)
I know modern diesels that do lots of short/low-temp running can generate carbon/emissions related warnings over time. I’m trying to determine whether these historic codes are a common “low-use diesel” artifact or a sign that the emissions system is already on the path to becoming expensive.Questions:
- On Ingenium 2.0 diesel, how concerned should I be about historic NOx/EGR/DPF-related codes if there are no active faults right now?
- What are the most common “big ticket” issues on 2017–2018 era Ingenium diesels (NOx sensors, EGR valve/cooler, DPF, SCR/AdBlue system, timing chain), and do they show up more with age than with kilometres?
- Is a specialist hoist inspection (Jag specialist) worth doing even if the car has good history, specifically to check:
- underbody leaks,
- exhaust/DPF/SCR hardware,
- intake/EGR carbon,
- engine/gearbox mounts,
- cooling system / fan operation?
- underbody leaks,
- Which live data values would you want to see from a scan to assess emissions health? (e.g., DPF differential pressure, regen counters, NOx sensor readings, EGR commanded vs actual, etc.)
- If you were buying one of these out of warranty, what would you budget as a sensible contingency reserve for diesel emissions-related repairs?
Thanks in advance guys. I appreciate the support and knowledge.
I do not have personal experience of the diesel but they don't have the best reputation. They need oil changes far more frequently than specified and hate short journeys. Oil dilution is a big problem for them.
Mike Fernie is a big Jaguar fan and this is a good overview of the engine
