Default 2010 Jaguar XF - interior lights draining battery

I have a 2010 Jaguar XF 3.0 diesel. It appears that the interior lights are draining the battery. I brought it to the garage that usually services it, not a main Jaguar dealer but a Jaguar specialist none the less. They replaced the passenger door lock at a cost of €350 and stated that this had stopped in the overhead dome lights and passenger footwell lights coming on sporadically and draining the battery. They left it ‘on charge’ over night and stated there was no drain on the battery. I collected it and the lights started flickering within 10 minutes.

I figured out that it is possible to turn off the dome lights and did this. The car has been fine for a week. Before this if left for more than a few hours, the battery would be dead. But on Friday night I turned on the dome light and forgot to hold it to turn it back off and the battery was again dead. The AA jump started it this morning and I drove it for a good hour. I made sure to turn off the dome lights and they were not coming on when the doors were opened. I’ve just tried to start the car and the battery is dead less than 4 hours later. What can I do? Could someone tell me exactly how these lights can be turned off? Thank you.

I’ve taken out the fuse for the interior lights and the AA have started it again. The most recent AA mechanic stated he doesn’t believe it to be the lights but that a software update is required because this problem started after I accidentally drained the battery and my phone now only partially works with it. If it’s dead in the morning I’ll know it’s definitely not the interior lights.

It's quite possible seeing as the Central Junction Box ( which acts as a control module as well ) supplies and controls the interior lights. Best to take to dealer, or someone who has access to SDD with latest software to do update.

Thank you. I will be doing this as soon as practicable, difficult during the week as the garage is the far side of the city but they are aware that the problem is ongoing. When they changed the passenger door lock they said they would run diagnostics if they had time but I don’t think it was done.

The AA guy this evening said that software updates should be done free of charge irrespective of warranty status or the age of the car. I find this hard to believe, especially with Jaguar! Do you know if this is the case?

Jaguar & Land Rover don't usually charge for the software, they charge for diagnostic, which is most likely what they'll be doing.

In my experience I have done this in the past for free many times, specially if I just did a repair on the vehicle for the same issue. Depending on where you are, I would assume ( but don't quote me ) that it's going to depend on who you're dealing with. I worked at a dealer in USA for over 8 years, and we always did things for free to keep customer happy. Even where I am now in NZ, we do the same here.

If they did charge anything, a 1 hour diagnostic charge is usually pretty standard, but I would just give them a call first and explain to them the situation, and see what they say. Most likely they will say they will want to have a look at it rather than going off what someone else says, and then they will move forward from there.

Thank you. I will hopefully bring the car to them on Friday and they can run the diagnostics. The car is now dead again so it is most certainly not the lights. Very frustrating as I would not have paid €350 to change the passenger door lock if it wasn’t going to fix the issue.
