Default 2010 XF 5.0 140k issues- flashing check engine, gas dripping out of tailpipes

Good morning everyone,

just wanted to post about some recent issues I've had and then also the solution that my Indy diagnosed just so everyone can have an idea if they run into similar issues.

my 2010 XF 5.0 died the other day, rough idle, restricted performance, check engine flashing. The car barely starts and smells like gas, gas is dripping from the engine, and from the tailpipes. I scanned it and it has misfires on cylinders 2, 4, 6, and 8. I initially diagnosed it as a failed injector but my mechanic got back to me and said that the ignition coils on those cylinders failed.

he is going to replace all the ignition coils, no need to replace the spark plugs, and he's going to do the manifold absolute pressure sensor while he's in there. The total came to $1,750. Just a heads up too many of those who are trying to self-diagnose similar issues!!

They failed all at the same time?

Are they on one bank?

If so I would want to know why they failed on that bank before simply replacing all the coils to possibly fail again.

Thanks for the reply, yes they are on the driver's side Bank, cylinders 2, 4, 6, 8. My mechanic said that she since it is pretty deep in the engine that I should replace all of them while he's in there. I haven't talked to him indepth, but he didn't say that they failed for a spdcific reason, my map sensor has been needing to replaced for a long time, but I don't think that's what caused it. The car has been maintained fairly regularly, but at 140K I assume that ignition coils we're not a irregular repair.

do you have any experience with this? Thanks so much

I do not have any specific experience with your issue Nicholas.

My suspicion is that something caused all the coils on one bank to fail at the same time as it is extremely unlikely that they would all fail on their own at the same time.

Have you got any failure codes from your mechanic? Something like this should have generated a failure code maybe several.

I am hoping someone with more experience with this type of failure will chime in.

Of course that would make sense, this is what came up when I scanned it right after it happened, thanks so much to you and any future replies!!

The other codes all refer to misfire issues.

Have you ever replaced the spark plugs?

Yeah the map sensor has been triggering the check engine for a year-and-a-half now. It has been going on and off, last week the idle was irregular, and shaking the car. Then this week is when it died. The spark plugs were replaced at 108k, the only other problem I've had with the car is I cracked my water pipe, or crossover pipe and that was almost 3 K ugh lol

Ok so spark plugs should not be contributing to the issue.

More people come on line in the evening here in the US.

P0106 is a map sensor code and the fix is clean the throttle body and the sensor. It has carbon buildup on it. This is why we run a decarb service that people think is snake oil. This is what it prevents and or fixes.
