Bought a 2013 XF 3.0L Supercharged Variant with 90,000 kms 2 days ago and it was sold me to with a knocking motor. Video of sound attatched below. Checking the oil filter revealed it was full of glitter and partially collapsed. Upon removing the supercharger I found a pool of oil in the galley of the engine.
I have removed the transmission today and almost have the motor out except I am unsure how to remove the axle shaft on the left side. I shall be tackling that tomorrow. I hope to learn from you guys as I see a few rebuild threads on the 5.0 SC going on and I have been studying those every day to see what I can learn to help me on my journey.
Got the engine out today that's about it, quite a lot of work involved removing the engine. Lots of crying and frustration in the process. The right side axle shaft removal was a pita to take out spanning the length of the whole vehicle almost. Currently I am waiting for the Timing Tool to lock the cams for when I release timing, not sure if it is necessary to lock the cams when releasing the chain.
Anyone know if the specs for tightening the mains and rod cap bolts the same for the 3.0 SC as the 5.0 SC? I haven't been able to find a manual and specs yet for the 3.0 SC and prodemand has no info whatsoever.
Man oh man, what a cluster-**** these engines are...
Good luck with the rebuild/replace, 'cuz based on davetibbs experience its gonna be long, painful, and expensive.

Removed oil pan and found shrapnel inside of the pan. Upon checking the Conrods only one had play and upon removing the cap I could not find the bearing so it looks it got disintegrated completely. I also took a look at the Chain Tensioners and I noticed that they had worn into the guides as the chain has a lot of slop when I first examined it after removing the crank plate. I am waiting on my injector puller to be able to remove the valve covers to check timing. I will be taking the crank to a machine shop to see if anything can be done. I am trying to source a Conrod for the 3.0L SC but they seem not to be available. Will keep you guys updated.
I have a few questions if anyone can chime in or direct me to any sites.
1. The Injector Teflon Seals where can those be acquired? Part #?
2. Does the 3.0 SC have a filter behind the Cam Sprockets? Are there any small filters in the motor I should be replacing?
3. Anyone have the Torque Specs for the crank mains and conrod caps?
Hey , I’m in the same process of getting this engine completed, i have a question, do you have any picture of the pistons from up , mainly the middle ones , my two middle piston bores have some type of scoring and a empty spot on them , I couldn’t find any picture to compare . I would appreciate it very much if you could post pictures of the pistons if you have .
Hi Dreday, I'm trying to start a rebuild and wondering where you sourced parts from. bearings failed and dont want to just get a cheapo crank. Please advise =. thanks
Big job good luck!
Most service guys use a lift and drop the engine and sub-frame out together from underneath.
They claim it's quicker and simpler too.
