The head bolts for the 5.0 V8 SC are in 4 stages: 20Nm, 35Nm, 90 degrees, then 120 degrees.

I've attached the workshop manual for the RH head.

Default 5.0 exhaust manifold bolts, torx size? 55 to big 50 to small

is their a special tool for this job? Looking at possibly removing a right side head, compression is escaping out of one of the exhaust valves any help would be greatly appreciated, 2010 xf 5.0 N/A. Winter gold ,

For future reference, if you set a title on a reply to a thread it's pretty hard to read, but I saw it - exhaust manifold bolts.

I struggled with these too - officially it's a "Polydrive" or a "Ribe" head, but the Ribe bit socket sets I got off Amazon would not fit them - ditto the head bolts. If I remember rightly I found the closest Torx bit that would fit (so I guess T50?) and this worked OK.

Especially with the exhaust manifold bolts they don't need to be that tight so you can probably get away with using a Torx bit. I also bought some standard bolts from Home Depot that had the same thread as the manifold bolts but a bit longer and cut the head off as well as a vertical cut in the remaining shaft with a whiz wheel. That way you have studs you can screw into/out of the head with a stubby flat blade screwdriver, which you can use to center the manifold like the special tool in the workshop manual without having to pay for it.

Im gonna look into those tips and maybe even try to find the proper fitting tools. Thanks. Your experience with this and all the posts and pics are very helpful.

Very nice!

@Alsaropolis can I recommend you start your own build thread, otherwise this thread could get pretty confusing as to which build is which!

After asking some folks around town a fellow mentioned something about some sockets called torx plus that are odd sized torx type bits, Used on audi vw and others. Gonna order a set will let you know how they work out

I saw Torx Plus on that wikipedia page when I posted it and wondered if actually they were the ones - I think you may have luck with them. Tempted to grab a set off Amazon myself.

Ah that explains it, yeah the mail notifications can be confusing. Start a new thread, I'd love to talk to you about some of the stuff you've done

Torx plus did sockets did not fit,, so i just filed down a regular torx and it worked fine as you said, funny thing tho, my compression loss on number 1 is thru an exhaust valve but as i remove the intake the number 2 intake valves are perfectly clean where all the rest have the standard carbon build up, suppose i need a new intake as well, well anyways have a good day!
