Are 7.5 inch wide winter rims / wheels possible?
I want to buy skinnier winter rims and tires for my Canadian 2009 XF Premium Luxury.
The standard rim for the car is:
Accordingly, I am wondering if I could fit 18" x 7.5" wheels if I can obtain them with the correct centre bore and bolt pattern. Some aftermarket wheels that I've seen on the internet have a 45mm offset, which should not be a problem, I think (10mm more inner clearance and just 2mm in from the standard outer position, according to 1010tires.com offset calculator) The question is whether these rims would be wide enough to clear the brake calipers?
It also seems possible that some Volvo S40 wheels might be a match.
Any suggestions as to fitment options (apart from "go to your dealer and buy whatever they suggest" lol) would be much appreciated.
Thanks
The standard rim for the car is:
- 19" x 8.5" "Auriga" wheel
- 5 x 108 bolt pattern
- Centre bore 63.3 mm
- Offset (ET) 49 mm
- All season tires are 245/40R/19.

I run 18x8 with stock sized winter tires.
The idea that taller narrower tires work better in winter is a bit dated now. The only time there is a small advantage is in deep snow or heavy slush. On bare road or packed snow or ice the stock size actually works better.
Having said that I can advise that the 18 x 8 fits my 2013 awd which has bigger brakes than my old 2009, but only just. A narrower rim might not fit because clearance to the front brake caliper is pretty tight.
European models do come with a 17 in wheel as standard on base trim but I'm not sure how wide it is.
If I were you I'd fit 18x8 and not try to find a 7.5 in wide wheel. It is the tire width that matters, not the wheel width, as long as the wheel isn't too wide for the tire you want.
You'll want 225/50 x 18 which will fit an 8 in wide wheel no problem. However, you will have very limited choices of tire in that unusual size.
Volvo uses the same Ford bolt circle but I'm not sure about the hub bore size or offset.
