Default Aftermarket exhaust voids factory warranty???

I haven't closed the deal yet on a 2010 XF. I told the dealer that I would buy a Mina exhaust and I want them to install it. I like the dual tips on each side. He said they won't do it because it could void the warranty!!!??
I have 700HP to the wheels of my CTS-V. The dealer still takes care of items that are covered under the factory warranty. If the trans or motor blows up I understand that neither will be covered.
Usually dealers "overlook" certain things as they get paid by the manufacturer for warranty work.

I'd never ask a dealer to install a aftermarket part. Do it on your own or have another shop do it. Don't tell the dealer about it so you don't have to deal with them complaining about it. If it doesn't create the issue you are bringing it in for they shouldn't say anything.

Makes sense. I spoke with a service guy there at length earlier today. He told me that aftermarket mufflers have different back pressure than stock (nothing I don't already know) and sometimes they throw a code. Have you had any issues with codes? I find it hard to believe.
Thanks.

My local dealer told me that exhaust should be fine...engine modifications not so much in terms of a possible warranty denial for a powertrain component breaking.

I second the not telling the dealer part and deal with it when it comes up. Realistically an axle back exhaust is not going to cause any kind of stress on the drivetrain that should break something. A dealer would have to make a really hard case to deny your warranty for basically a muffler replacement.

I call BS as well!

BMW Dealership installed an aftermarket Exhaust of my previous M5 and I never had issues getting warranty stuff covered!

Rosenthal Jaguar installed a Mina Exhaust on my current XFR and again no issues with warranty work!

In my experience adding aftermarket parts can void warranty coverage on items they are related to, or for problems they actually cause. Not void the entire factory warranty outright.

If you water pump fails, or power seat gives trouble.....for example....factory warranty coverage shouldn't be denied because you have an aftermarket exhaust.

Dealers are supposed to be the eyes and ears of the factory but different dealers have different philosophies about warranty administration issues. Some are very hard nosed and often incorrect in the process. Others are more lax.....often depending on their relationship with the customers and/or customer attitude.

Aftermarket service contract/extended warranties (which are more like insurance polcies than warranties) are a different kettle of fish. I've seen coverage summarily cancelled for having modified anything.

Cheers
DD

Thanks guys. I think a lot of it has to do with the relationship the customer has with the service writer/service guys. I am tight with the guys at my local GM/Caddy dealership. They will "overlook" many things as they get paid by the manufacturer for warranty related work.

That's not what the dealer would say. Instead, they will point out that the aftermarket exhaust caused more vibration to be transmitted to the interior and engine, thus causing the pump failure and power seat to fail!

Just kidding. Doug is right.

I think some dealers rather say no to Mods, means they don't want to deal with Corporate..

Anyway, I never had to use this, but some Dealers need to be reminded of this; Magnuson-Moss
Warranty Act

Especially those dealers who have lost tens (or hundreds) of thousands of dollars in a warranty audit. That usually puts 'em on the straight and narrow for a few months :-).

My dealer service advisor knows that I have a Mina exhaust installed. Not an issue at all. In fact, they love it.

FWIW, my dealer INSTALLED my Quicksilver exhaust and actually recommended it during my test drive!
