Default Another Exhaust Thread, 3.0 AWD

I read most every exhaust thread on here ( F-type and XF) not much on teh 3.0 at all so I wanted to see if there was anyone that might have an opinion.

I am running the VAP pulley and tune and it has transformed the car. Now that's it's pusing 460 +/- HP i figured I woudl turn my attention to the exhaust.

Unlike the 5.0 (sc and NA and XFR) the midpipe narrows to less than 2 inches at the dual center resonators. The forward muffler is much large on teh 3.0

I decided to add high flow cats (I may have been scammed by the muffler shop, but that's anohter story) Had Mangaflow cats installed - not sure they are 200-400 cell cats, but am lookin ginto it.

Anyway, I wanted to match up the exhaust. The "custom muffler shop" did what they always do, threw up a couple of magna flows and and added larger resonators, deleted the front muffler.

Had a horrendous drone right at cruising speed. I played with a different set of rear mufflers, took care of the drone at cruising speed but added it worse on acceleration. Sounded great at idle though but big deal

I am more concerned with high flow not sound. I figured I would try to fine a full XFR exhaust since the engine is rated at 510, Jaguar likely built the exhaust to handle that HP level. Since I am only running 460 (unconfirmed), i was thinking why not fit an XFR exhaust on it

and finally one turned up, Got cat back all the way to tip for $300. Just installed it and am much happier

I think it may need to have the axel back replaced, it does feel like there is less low end torque. I think the only place that could happen is at the rear cans. The front tiny muffler and resonators are all straight through 2.25 inches.

Shop had to move the front muffler back to get around the AWD transmission. Fit perfectly otherwise.

Sounds fine, way better (not saying much) than the stock 3.0.

Feels like its a little more restrictive less low end torque than the magnaflow set up. All feel though

I am going to play with the rear boxes now, figuring that is the only place there could be a bit of restriction.

Is it the stock XFR exhaust with the valves in the rear mufflers?
If so you can do what many have done before and get your exhaust shop to cut the valves out and weld a plate over each hole.
That way the mufflers are permanently fully open and you should get better flow and more noise, without drone.
It should also be a fair bit cheaper than new mufflers.
If you choose to go with new mufflers do not fall for the trap of small hi-flow straight through mufflers. Great for increased exhaust gas flow but terrible for drone, especially on a V6 (been there done that on a Mitsubishi V6). Instead get the largest free flowing mufflers you can that will still fit, and I mean in all three dimensions - length, width and height. Check out the Magnaflow listings at Summit Racing (hundreds of them!) and you should be able to find something suitable. Be careful about inlet and outlet placements and sizes, from memory you want offset inlet and centred outlet and 2.5" both ends, but don't quote me as I'm just going by memory!

Thanks

I was thinking about pulling the valves. I am just worried I would like that on the 3.0 at least and its permanent it seems. So may wait on that..

I was looking at offset/center mufflers, looks like they will fit. I need to find a real custom muffler chop that will actually do mandrel bent tubes..Hard to find a shop like that around me. I might want to put some temporary set up in and try a few things.

Mostly happy right now, I will mess with it over time. Thanks for the input.

@OzXFR What about a Mina or Quicksilver exhaust, drone as well ? Better flow than stock without valves?

Mina and Quicksilver reputedly have minimal drone (but still some) but I doubt either would flow much better than stock XFR with valves removed.
And they cost a bundle, waaaay more than just getting the valves removed, although you might get lucky with a used one on Fleabay etc.
One thing that many people overlook is back pressure, you need some for the exhaust to "scavenge" properly on a V engine and often a completely free flow system (straight pipes from the headers back with zero cats, resonators or mufflers) will perform worse than a stock system. As well as being obnoxiously loud and droney!

Yeah I hear ya about back-pressure. I am running XFR mid-pipe with the small front and full resonators ( considered putting in an x-pipe but wanted to quiet her down first. ) I hit them wiht a boroscope and both of them are stright through 2.25 pipes. I will consider the exhaust valve removal as a final thought

I think the 510 XFR exhaust set up on a 465hp VAP tune 3.0 likely flow enough but I didn't want to waste the hi flow cat install if there is more to get out of it.

I was thinking of rigging up a way to test various designs of axle back with some clamps and hangers and trolling around my open country roads with some different types up there

Maybe do a single or double chambered high flow, as well as the large box straight through and see how it sounds/feels

It will be fun to experiment, kick the boredom out of this pandemic

Default XFR Mufflers

Can you upload an exhaust clip please, I cannot decide on what exhaust, and throwing XFR mufflers on sounds like a great idea actually I really want to hear it
