Coil-on-plug failed- any compatibility with other makes?
One thing after another. Two days after I replaced the a/c evaporator, I get a misfire and restricted performance. OBDii says 'misfire on cylinder 8', I swapped the coils between cylinder 8 and 4 and the reader says 'misfire on cylinder 4'. Ok that was easy enough; now I am wondering if there is any compatibility with other makes as I have numerous parts suppliers and car dealers locally but an hour drive either way to a Jaguar / Land Rover dealer and I don't want to wait a week to import a part. Any Ford or other engines use the same coils as the 4.2 SV8?

Yes it appears that the coils are specific to the vehicle so there is pretty much zero chance of me being able to walk into a parts shop this morning in my home town and buy one over the counter. Multitudes of online sellers keen to send me parts but I would be waiting a week with the car again not driveable. Hoping the dealer will have stock, only a 2-hour round trip.
I was surprised to find that the dealer did not have stock, I would have thought the XF ignition coils were a frequent-ish sale for a Jaguar dealership but it was an overnight order from their central warehouse. I got one instead from a local generic parts supplier who got it in mid-afternoon for a morning order, a Goss brand, no idea if that is any good or not, box said 'made in china' but so do many of the car's original electronics. Car is running properly again.
I have no experience with 'coil on plug' systems, I was in the motor trade in my youth but that is a lifetime ago and such things were not even thought of. Should they be changed on some kind of schedule, or only fixed if they're broke? Car has done 170,000km (about 105,000 miles) so probably now one of the highest mile SV8s around.

Coils a wear item on euro brands, with VW/Audi having the worst track record.
I believe NGK was the factory supplier for JLR and come rebranded as OEM when ordering from dealer so that's why I suggest those, should be good for 100,000 km. The generics can be problematic and definitely don't last as long. It is one of those parts that is not negotiable to be new from OEM supplier in my opinion, similar to MAF and O/2 sensors.
Mine just crested 230,000 km and only due to my time, effort and unjustified amounts of cash.

Same engine S-Type R, double my miles.
I'm actually at 278,000 and still getting compliments almost daily. People are amazed at her age.
