Hello All,

I just bought a 2012 XF Portfolio and I have a "Coolant Level Low" warning on the dash. I've done a little research, and lots of people on here say it's probably the float in the reservoir tank. They say to just replace the tank itself, which comes with the sensor and the float in built inside the tank. I would just like some confirmation or any other ideas that might lead me in the right direction. The coolant is in fact full, I've took the cap off to verify.

Your car appears to have covered 104K miles, the coolant looks like it needs changing. you may be able to recover the level float by removing the tank and washing it out but it likely it would not last long. In the absence of the maintenance history of the car I would take the opportunity to check out the whole cooling system, water pump, plastic pipes front and rear etc install a new tank, new coolant and whatever else looks dodgy.

Just looking at the pics I would look at changing the power steering oil and also check the routing of the power brake vacuum tube which should be outside of the engine cover.

I recently had a similar issue with my 2013 XF. Mine turned out to be a combination of the water pump and a crack in the rear plastic pipes. Changed those two and the issue was permanently resolved.

It's a fools game to replace one or two items. This is a well known problem so get your shopping list together and plan on doing it all at once. Otherwise the parts will fail one by one causing you to redo the labor over and over.

Update....

I just replace the expansion tank, and I still have the "Low Coolant Level" message. Does anyone know if it takes time for the sensor to reset itself? I cleared all codes with my scan tool that is designed for Jags and Land Rovers, and disconnected the positive battery terminal in order to start up the vehicle.

 

Maybe too late now but before you bolted the tank down and filled it I would connect the coolant level sensor and turn the tank upside down to put the float in the full position. To see if that would turn off the light.

Can you see the float rising to the top of the coolant in the tank?

Did the new tank come with a new sensor?

 

You can pull the float "up" with a thin wire with a hook at the bottom.

 

Mine had the same issue at 19,500 miles. We replaced the tank.
Others have said too much water in the coolant mixture can also cause the float to sink.
