Cracked Cam Cover
My "new to me" XF showed the "Restricted Performance" message at the weekend. Diagnostic test today and a blocked MAP sensor, and then a cracked Cam cover, was discovered. Although the Warranty company should cover it, the dealer who sold me the car told me, it is a disappointing start to Jaguar ownership. My concern is that if the Cam Cover is cracked on one side, a "common problem" as the garage man told me, is the other one far behind? What could I do as a preventative measure? Reinforce the likely areas for cracking with plastic steel, like Devcon? If so, what is the common area for cracking, if any?
Sadly, on looking online and at the various Jaguar Forums, "cracked cam cover" comes up fairly frequently. However, your response is actually quite reassuring, because it suggests the opposite, that it isn't at all a frequent occurrence, and which has consequently made me feel a lot more optimistic!

I suspect you have V6 diesel while kansanbrit has a V8 petrol.
Yes, cracked cam covers on the V6 diesel is relatively common but unheard of on the V8 petrol (or V6 petrol - AJ126 - for that matter).
I assume that the cracking is because of a faulty part or a faulty design? If so, are the contemporary replacement parts better? Or are they just as likely to crack? The "plastic steel reinforcement" idea doesn't look practicable on closer observation of the part. The mechanic at the Jaguar independent that I went to, when I asked him, told me that, unfortunately, there is no particular place where cracking occurs, so no particular place to reinforce.
Chouan,
You are much more likely to find the info you want over on the Pommy forum here: https://www.jaginfo.org//
Plenty of threads and posts about cracked cam covers on the 3.0 diesel as the majority of XFs sold in the UK are/were diesels while no diesel Jag has ever been sold in the US.

Thanks for that.It does seem curious that there seem to be different forums for essentially the same car. I'd posted on this one because it is that of the specific car that I have.
In case there are any members with the relevant knowledge here, I've seen this issue reported and discussed in all of the Jaguar forums, with the frequent comment that it is either a design or a manufacturing fault. My question is that, if this has been known about for the past few years, at least 6 as far as I can see, has anything been done to improve the part so as to prevent this from happening in the future?
I noticed here JAGUAR 3.0 TDV6 NEW INLET MANIFOLD ROCKER CAM COVERS LHS & RHS XF XJ F-PACE SET | eBay , for example, that this parts supplier is stating that their parts won't suffer from this problem.
