Differential oil change
Hi all,
Hope this topic hasn't been covered but here goes anyway!!
Want to change my Diff oil (Done 102,000km) and am a little confussed. Service manual states i should use Ford spec M2C192A fluid. This spec appears to be a 75w140 fluid. After investigation these specs and checking the Castrol site to see what their recommendation is, it states my chassis should be 75w90. Seems to be a fair difference in vicosity level. Castrol recommend Syntrax Longlife 75w90 for my vin which is a R44xxx number.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
regards
Joe

I just ordered some amsoil severe gear 75w140 for my rear diff. Multiple online sources say that 75w140 meets the m2c 192a spec, although I'm trying to get confirmation that the severe gear oil meets the spec as well (as opposed to the regular amsoil gear oil)
An amsoil rep emailed me saying that the severe gear meets the spec although the viscosity guidelines for the m2c 192a spec indictate that an 80w90 fluid is required, which makes no sense to me. Is anyone successfully running 75w140 amsoil severe gear in their rear diff?

I used RP 75W140 fluid:

I know this may be expensive, but I would go with the jaguar gear oil, that way if there's any problems, they can't blame it on you using the wrong stuff. AMSoil makes good oil, but I heard for their transmission fluid, people had problems which makes me question everything else; especially if the viscocity is different.
Good thing I decided to do the diff fluid change. My mechanic noticed that oil was escaping through the seals so they need to replace all of the diff seals.
My only worry is that I don't have the same problem in 100k km due to the issue with the excess carborundum eating away at the new seals. Is the only way to totally sort the issue to replace the diff with an updated unit?

My mechanic topped up the fluid in the meantime ahead of my appointment next week. He needed to add about 0.85L to totally top it up. A diff change only requires 1.25L of oil so I'm not sure if there's going to be internal damage due to such a large quantity of oil leaking out. Any opinions on that?

Maybe when he opened up the fill area some of the old fluid spilled out. I'll need to ask him why he had to use so much oil to top of up
Hopefully the new seals will sort the issue.

I understand your point, but between the first time I read this topic, 3-4 weeks ago, and when I changed the rear gear lube, 3 days ago, I did a bit of research. What I found, the Castrol SAF-XO, which is supposedly the OE recommended oil, is no longer marketed. Therefore, an acceptable substitute was needed. Maybe I'm being foolish, but I would hope that when I go to a manufacturers website, and click on their product recommendation chart, I'm getting good information.
I didn't realize that the recommended gear oil is an 85W-140. In the case of our XF, it doesn't see too much extended driving in the summer, with the high temperatures. Our car sees most of it's miles in the fall winter, in the colder temps.....
