Rumour is that Jaguar had a run of diffs filled with contaminated lubricant from their supplier. They are replacing them as fast as they can find them. You may have got unlucky and had a duff diff replacement. It is not unheard of for a dealer to cannibalize a stock car to fix a problem with a customer car, or for Jaguar to have supplied some contaminated diffs as spares. It is impossible to tell if the diff is contaminated by looking at it so I say don't blame Jaguar on this one. If the third diff fails then there's som'at wrong with the drivetrain somewhere.

Note also that all new XF differentials have a specified running in procedure just as is the case for the engine. It is important to follow the restrictions in your owner's manual for the specified running in mileage for the differential unit as well. Now your engine is run in it is doubly important to observe this second set of running in restrictions to ensure the replacement diff seats its gear teeth correctly.

For example, if you are driving in slippery conditions you should ensure that the DSC is active to limit wheelspin. You must refrain from hard cornering and high speeds until the diff is fully run in. No other car I have owned has specified running in for the rear axle like the XF does.

Just out of curiosity, who supplies/manufactures the diffs?

Cheers

This unusual break in instruction for the rear axle is hidden in the owner's manual right after the engine break in instructions. The dealer might not have been informed either, which is not right but possible.

I checked the nhtsb and they don't have one listed- it may be a technical service bulletin as well.

Of course, our car has this type of problem as well
