Default Engine knock/No oil

My 09 XF 133,000 miles developed a loud knocking noise yesterday on my way home from work. I pulled over and checked my oil, there was none touching the bottom of the stick. I changed the oil in January (10 months ago) everything was good after that. The noise sounds like this jaguar video from YouTube
. I took off the passenger side valve cover (where the noise is coming from) and it dosent look like secondary timing chain tensioner is damaged, it's a newer one that is not all pastic only the top and bottom. Im going to get a socket to spin the crank and see if i can see anything unusal. Im begining to think it's something to do with the pistons and valves. Any ideas?

If there is no oil in the engine, there is probably significant damage to the main and rod bearing shells.

You must determine where the oil has gone. Did it leak out? When was the last time it was checked? How many kilometres/miles has the vehicle been driven since the oil was last changed?

MILEAGE

129,000

I filled it with 7.5 qts, I have only driven 4000 miles since then. I have no oil leaks or evidence of a leak. Weird right.

Have you drained and inspected the oil for metal particles?

I havent drained it but I will drain it and check. I really think it's the rod bearing.

Metal particles that do not stick to a magnet are the tell-tale sign.

Almost certainly one or more spun rod bearings. The good news is that all parts to repair are listed and pretty readily available if that's the route you choose to go down, unlike us 5.0 owners 😝

There were no metal particles, just some really bad looking fresh oil.

Be sure you examine the oil under a bright light while it's still in the drain pan, or run it thorough a coffee filter to see what is trapped.

I'm going to double check in a day or 2, but if it is the rods or bearings will I need to pull the engine? The book states in order to do pistons the engine will need to be on a stand.

Beyond the main and rod bearings, the cylinders must be inspected for wear. It may be best to remove and disassemble the engine to determine the extent of the damage to other components.

So i found twisted magnetic metal bits in the oil pan and a lot of small magnetic particles. I tried removing the fuel injectors to each cyclinder but the knocking did not stop not sure which cyclinder(s) have been affected.

Based on the photos, the metal bits appear to be part of a piston.

You will need to disassemble the engine to determine the cause and extent of the damage. It may be more economical to find a used engine to install.
