Default Finally got rid of the OEM lug nuts

I recently had a run of bad luck with the front right wheel/tire (two new tires in 45 day period and a new wheel last week). After I hit a pothole hard enough to damage the tire to where it went flat in about an hour and bend the wheel itself, I tried to change to the spare, but the cheap sheet metal cover just kept spinning over the nut itself.

I did forum search, and found a post recommending Gorilla Automotive nuts. The original post stated to use the nuts for Toyota, but after doing some searching on the Gorilla website, they do have nuts for Jags listed in the "New Products" section. The part number is 73138J (the Toyota nut number was the same, just ended in T, not J) Gorilla doesn't sell directly to the public, so I got them through Summit Racing.com. Price was $5 per, and I replaced all 20 at once.

These are much better nuts, and are more substantial than the OEM nuts. Solid design with the floating washer. Big thing to note is that the Gorilla nuts are 21 mm, not the 19mm of the OEM. There were no fitting issues because of the larger diameter.

You can see what the dealer mechs had to do to get that one lug off...

New nut:

I also recommend getting their telescoping lug wrench kit. You are going to replace the stock 19mm lug wrench with a 21mm socket, and this set fits the bill:

I was told the Toyota locking Gorrilla Lugs would not fit my XFR, so be careful using the Toyota spec lugs as they are longer.

Update, ok so I ordered and installed the Gorilla system wheel locking solution where ALL the lugs nuts are locks. PN 73633T, they are the Totyota fitment and are 5mm longer than stock Jag BUT FIT FINE! And are much less than the Jag lugs. The locking lugs can be tightened to Jag specks, and extra keys are only $10.50 so 1 for the car and 1 for the tool box.

I've run Gorilla lug nuts the last 20 years with NO RUST or issues of ANY kind.

Hmm... Have not had a problem yet with my lug nuts, but I do remember thinking they were cheap when I last did my brakes. I'm convinced that this will save me a headache later. Only I don't see why I should pay $5 a nut when I can buy them in bulk through Amazon for $1.83 a piece.

If someone stateside wants to go halfsies (or two people want to go thirdsies) let me know. I'll charge you the $36.68 Amazon wants for 20 plus whatever shipping is to you. Should have them in about 3 weeks.

Well thank you for asking......... good.

Other than a slight bit of corrosion which I clean up twice a year, they are looking and holding up very well. Very happy I swapped them on both cars.

I tried the Gorilla Toyota lugs and didn't have much luck, seemed more like an imperial cut on the thread than metric, or a bad batch. Ended up going with 20 set 12mm x 1.50 Chrome Shank Lug Nuts 19mm head with fit type for Jaguar S-Type, XF, X-Type W6015J for each car.

That was a long time ago now. I can give you something similar from the seller I purchased from (allon4wheels) but the original link that I used off ebay has long been dead.

There are many options out there and I have no affiliation to any. This looks like what I had purchased if that helps but you really are looking for a good quality 12mmx1.5mm thread, 19mm spanner. Flat with washer and NOT acorn shaped.

I just received a package of 20 nuts from the seller in the above post (the first of the two links) and I am not confident to use them. I compared a few measurements of the new nuts with the original Jaguar nuts; firstly the inside diameter of the nut (minor thread diameter) is 10.60m on the new nuts and 10.34mm on the originals; this means that the thread depth on the aftermarket nut is 70% (which is a fairly standard thread depth for industrial applications) whereas the original Jaguar nuts give 85% thread depth. I am thinking there might be a good reason why Jaguar specified 85%. The thread in the aftermarket nuts also looks a bit dodgy; don't know how this has happened but they all have the same fault in the first few mm of thread:

Secondly, the captive washer is retained differently on the afternarket nuts- on the originals, the washer is staked to retain it in a groove in the nose of the nut, whereas the nose of the aftermarket nut has been knurled to retain the washer. This knurled section will dig into the bore of the wheel:

The outside diameter of the nose on the genuine nut is 18.44mm; the plain section on the aftermarket nut is 18.14mm and the knurling has an O.D. of 18.70mm.
The nose of the aftermarket nut is also longer than the original, 10.0mm vs 8.34 but I don't think this is a problem as they will not bottom out,

I'm disappointed in the quality of these parts and am not confident to fit them. The stupid metal jacket on the original nuts is a complete pain once they have been attacked a few times with rattle guns, but not as big a pain as losing a wheel during a 'spirited' drive.
I'd be interested to see a similar comparison with other aftermarket wheel fasteners.

Anyone know where the 'gorilla' brand fasteners are made? The phrase 'made from hardened steel' does not fill me with confidence. Perhaps when I have nothing else to do I'll see if I can buy just one and measure the thread depth.

All made in china. The replacements should be basically Toyota spec. The struggle here is is trying to stay with Jag OEM socket size, too hard to figure out what will work. Forget about it, just get a Toyota set and a 21mm lug wrench.

I don't have the old ones to compare to as I trashed them with great prejudice, but I got these 4 years ago and they've been fine other than some corrosion on edges that you can read about in the reviews. Also in the reviews are many Jag owners saying they fit. These chinese lugs including any Gorilla or whatever all corrode eventually and I suspect its from impact wrenches when car is being serviced. If you are the only person touching the wheels it can be prevented with a periodic mist of spray lubricant to keep them looking good longer I'd imagine. They have reliably come off the wheels over a dozen times since and that's all that matters.

Or purchase stainless steel versions then no rust. My chrome ones also got hints of rust on the edges from use as posted above. Not bad but if I had to do it again I would see how much more expensive it would be to use the SS versions.

Glad you got them changed out at any rate!
