Default FSJB memory

As I understand it the FSJB in 2013 xf 2.2 is supposed to hold the master copy of the VIN etc.. After a battery disconnect RAM working memory loads the info from the backup memory. Some sources state the backup memory is EEPROM, others say flash. There is a known fault when this memory gets corrupted. That requires a factory reset and then SDD or AutoLogic or similar to program it to the car.. When this fails the car will not recognise the key and will not have the VIN correctly stored.

Can anybody confirm what type of memory the backup is? If EEPROM or flash it should not go bad unless there are e g bad soldering, water ingress or similar causes. If RAM or similar it would require a type of battery on the JB printed circuit board, e g a button cell or similar.

Does anybody have firm info on this?

Any idea what causes it to go bad in the first place?
