Gearshift not functioning with p0851/0 codes
We just picked up a 2012 XFR. It is an awesome car, but the fun has already begun. The gearshifter, lights, etc in the center have stopped working all together. They blinked on, off, on a few times and then finally went off. The car will now start, but the gearshift does not move (up or down) and it will not go into gear. This is accompanied by a transmission fault warning. The codes pulled thus far are p0851 and p0850. Any insight or help would be great.
Welcome to the forum tadbyd,
Later Jaguars have extended DTC's (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) in the format PXXXX.YY
Many scantools can read the first PXXXX errors but it takes a factory equivalent scan tool to read the full codes.
P0850 refers to the Park/Neutral Switch input circuit. The final two alphanumeric values will give more information on exactly what is wrong. They point to a Gearshift Module fault.
P0851 also refers to the Park/Neutral Switch input circuit. The final two alphanumeric values point to a Gearshift Module circuit fault.
Jaguars are very sensitive to battery condition and a partially discharged or failing battery can throw up all kinds of weird error codes. For this reason, many members (myself included) keep their cars on a battery tender such as CTEK when not in use.

You literally just bought it? Any recourse to the seller? Seems a bit suspicious that it happened straight away... Did you have an inspection done and if so any findings?
Definitely agree re battery
Is it out of warranty? They kept changing how many years the warranty covers so I loose track
If you can pull the full codes then folks here might be able to help some more. But unless it's the battery I expect you will have to take it in for a diagnostic and thorough check out

We determined it as a gear shifter failure as well. We ordered one from lkq already. Hopefully this resolves it. We already took the old shift unit out and spotted a few corrosion points on the board.
Thank you for the response and we will look into the battery tender solution as well.
Is there anyone here that can determine interchangeability of part numbers?
We ordered a 2013 shifter with model number DX23-7E453-BB
The one in the car(2012) is a CX23-7E453-BE
Thanks in advance!

It was sold as is. It has 59000 miles. I have a 30 day drive train warranty, but I am hesitant to have their mechanics touch it. I would rather do it my self and make sure it is white gloved vs having them break something else
If the shifter does not resolve the problem, then I will definitely push for the dealerships involvement. I will have it towed to the Jaguar dealership here in Orlando (not purchased there).
It has been many years, but I have had bad experiences with dealerships making "after sold" repairs on their dime.

Corrosion on the shifter unit? Is there any possibility that this car has had water damage? Because corrosion in the centre console is definitely not normal and the fault you describe is also very odd - unless it is a failing battery, as suggested, or a discharged battery. Low battery voltage on modern cars, Jaguars included, results in random electronic failures, warning lights, the touch screen freezing, door locks, seats, windows not operating properly...and yes, perhaps even the shifter unit.

I do not see any signs of water damage. None of the carfax, autocheck, etc show water or any other damage (not that this can be 100%).
We did find signs of coke or other soda spilled under everything when we removed the console components. only a couple of areas showed light corrosion and the rest of the board looked great.
The funny part is that the parking brake switch was activating the parking brake and starting and stopping the engine as well (it was acting like the start button and ebrake combined)
when the module is plugged in the daytime running led's blink off and on as well... weird!

You experience is a good demonstration of why I do not drink anything in my car, and I do not let passengers drink in the car. Just too much $$ electronics around that can get fried by an avoidable spill.
