I typically dont keep cars for too long, 3 years max.....but this special guy was an exception (also because I was in the middle of buying/selling houses and couldnt focus on car shopping)....but never the less i never felt the itch to get rid of it as I have in other cars. we met in August 2016....and the deal was done in 10 minutes. there have been a few ups and downs as to be expected with a high maintenance older car....but thankfully it was nothing too serious (a few flat tires, blown alternator, dead battery)

alas, the age of the car was starting to catch up. Maybe I am a hypochondriac when it comes to the car, but worry of the timing chain was getting to me, plus i think the rims were bent, suspension was a little off and creeking (tie rods)...transmission made an annoying clunk all the time and the dash was coming apart. it just felt like the right time to go. Tried selling it for months, originally had it listed at 20k, brought it down to 17...still no bites....ended up trading it in for $14.5 (not sure how ripped off i got)

the good news! i am not leaving you guys! i traded in for a 2015 XJL AWD.

but i already miss her although i think i made the right decision getting rid of the ticking time bomb

Good on you for getting rid of it at the right time and congrats on the XJ, I love the interiors on those! I just started hearing the rattle from my timing chain and luckily I still have about 1.5 yrs of fidelity warranty left, so working out a possible fix with the dealer and fidelity before it actually destroys the motor. If fidelity won't cover a repair before anything actually happens, I will most likely go the same route as you and get rid of the car.

But it is genuinely hard to find an appealing replacement for this car, heated/cooled seats, heated steering, 1200w B&W sound, space for 4 adults, 510hp/RWD, and all wrapped in an Ian Callum design. A comparable German car is significantly more expensive and no thank you to the Italian 4-doors. XJR seems like a good choice, but don't know if I'll like the size.

How many miles were on your car when you traded it, if you don't mind me asking.

I really wanted an XJR, but there was only ONE for sale within the closest 300 miles, and they were all 40k+ miles.

@Jaaaggg one bit of info for you - I had a Carchex warranty on my car and started hearing the rattle, figured it was a good time to take it in (no CEL), dealership diagnosed it as timing chain issue and wanted to replace everything (chain, guide, tensioner, etc). They spoke to Carchex and carchex said because there was no CEL they needed to request a "tear down" for further investigation...which would come out of my pocket if carchex declined the claim. I called Carchex to see what was going on, the claims adjuster was telling me he was VERY experienced with the 5L V8 engines and the timing chain issue...he explained it inside and out as if it was his only job. The issue was, Carchex was arguing that they only wanted to replace the tensioner, and not the whole thing, but even at that, they werent going to pay the full price jaguar was quoting...so there was a lot of back-and-fourth, they were only going to cover 80% of the cost (because they were arguing Jaguar was charging too much, labor was too high), and would have still put me out without a car for another 2-3 weeks while they did further investigation. I ended up pulling my car out, cancelling my warranty. I hope your warranty wont put you through the same hell, i would be interested to know, do keep me informed.

Sold the car with 68,740 miles.

Thanks for the info, I'll keep this in mind. I have had this issue with Fidelity before for another repair where they only covered 80% due to labor hours. But all I had to do was have the dealership send Fidelity paperwork that this labor is justified and they approved it, so I am hoping it won't be an issue this time. I am right around 63k miles and really want to keep the car for another year or two, the terrible trade-in values would mean I would bring in negative equity into a new car purchase.

Glad you're keeping with Jag
Is that the 3.0 V6?
How does the driving experience (and size) compare? (Do you have it yet?)

yes I got the 3.0 V6.

Driving experience is night and day. the XFR was raw, growly, bumpy, rough and tough.....this is smooth as silk, quiet, comfortable. I may have tires or rims that are out of shape, so the ride at 50+ mph is shakey, but other than that the car is good. the size is massive. I got the Long wheelbase, and you can tell its bigger. normal cruising its actually not that bad, but when you're in a parking lot or garage, you immediately feel like an elephant

Ho many miles on your XFR when traded? Curious about when you decided to dump ( and when the engine started to rattle)

Good to read a post from a happy owner. Reading endless reports of breakdowns across our forums gets so depressing at times.

You look to have taken a relatively substantial $$$ hit but that goes with the territory. I hope the XJL proves to be as reliable for you.

I have a 2009 XF Supercharged with 100k miles. At this point, it's far enough along that I'm going to keep it and drive it into the ground. Still runs well but a little clunky.
An XJ(R) is at the top of the list for when I do replace the XF .
 thanks for your summary.
