It is simple to do.

Passenger footwell behind the glove box, look up from the footwell toward the side of the car you will see a door, open it and the filter will slide down and out. Use a flashlight to look in there and clean and debris thru the opening, push the new filter up inot plac eand close the door, thats it!

Default changing air filter

thanks re thr reponse on the cabin filter. Again I have a 2009 xf luxury and i do know where the air filter is located. When i unclip the cover on the right side there is a hose attached to it which seems flexible. do I have to take clamp off the hose to get at the air filter or does the cover lift up enough to get the filter out without having to take off the clamp

The was no hose attached to the door on mine. The door or cover I'm referring to is located up behind the glove box not on the side wall. I simply opened it and slid the filter down and out if memory serves.

Here is what I had posted when I changed mine a while back :

Their is a fiber cover under the glovebox area held in by 3 clips, squeeze the clip together with a plier and pull it down and out, once all 3 clips are out the cover drops down and slides completely out (the clips stay in the slots on the cover). The filter cover has 2 clips on each side you squeeze inward and the cover with the filter slides down and out, it is located toward the outer side of the wheel well, you can't miss it. Make sure you have a flashlight, the footwell light just blinds you.

thank you again I was able to take out the cabin filter. The filter I am now referriing to is the Air filter under the hood of the car. I know where it is located but do I have to disassemble the air hose attached to get the air filter out.

Nope, just undo the screws holding the top of the housing down and you should be able to lift it up to pull the old filter out and put the new one in. I changed both (2 filters on the supercharged model) of mine this way with no issues.
