i believe 2 piston front and single piston rear. they are huge calipers and rotors, but fairly conventional piston design. remember the rear pistons need to be turned in.

Yes, definitely 2 piston front and single piston rear, both sliding caliper design.

You have to remember that more pistons does not mean a better brake, you want to look at the total surface area being applied, and our two pot fronts and one pots rears are well designed and do a very good job.

I will politely agree on the fronts, and disagree on the rears. The rear XFR and XFR-S caliper design and pad design are not adequate for a car of this size.

If the rear pads were bigger they wouldn't need to be changed twice as often as the front brakes.

Who has reported that? I don't see it as a common issue so may be dragging brake(s) on your car.

Pretty much every XF owner has reported this.
Multiple reasons why the rear brake pads need replacing twice as often as the fronts:
1. The anti-dive system which applies the rear brakes earlier and harder than the front brakes.
2. The EPB on the rear brakes and the way it operates.
3. The rear brake pads are a lot thinner than the front brake pads.
Being "bigger" would not help with 1. or 2. but being thicker would help a lot with 3.
