Default Instrument cluster surround - rattle

Maybe unrelated, but since having my airbag recall done a few weeks ago, I have an irritating rattle over bumps. It's a hard plastic noise and I've traced it to the black plastic surround around the instrument cluster (see photos). The right hand edge is moving and rattling and in fact the whole black unit seems to move around. It touches the clear plastic in front of the instrument cluster and I think that's the noise I hear.

I can prob just use foam to stop it moving, but does anyone know how it's held on? A screw or clip or something? If not a major job I'd like to refit it properly

Thanks!

They remove the wood paneling next to the instrument panel for the recall. There is a clip on that, which they may not have put on properly or had dropped inside. See if the wood paneling is loose. They didn't attach it properly after I went back for my 2nd time around as they messed up the AC door actuator lever (no air out of the center vents) the first time they did the airbag recall replacement.

The instrument cluster surround is held in place by screws at the bottom either side under the other trim. There is also at least one screw in the top under a small square cover

Can the vehicle be returned to the place where you had the airbag replaced so that they can rectify the faulty workmanship ?

Seems I've been living in a barrel, I heard of the recall a long time ago but didn't know it affected JLR. Evidently seems both our JLR cars are on the list of affected vehicles, but no recall has been done in Finland so far. I looked at the list at
https://www.cars.com/articles/is-you...1420680509675/
and I presume the year listed is the manufacturing year, not the model year? Our VW van doesn't seem to be on the list (yay ).

Did you get the rattle sorted?

i've just started noticing the EXACT same rattling sound from that plastic piece and now that i think of it, it didn't start until after the airbag recall work was done. i'll look for the screws tomorrow...

Ok - thanks for the input. I finally got round to investigating this morning

The instrument panel surround is held in by 3 screws. One in the top middle above the steering wheel accessed by a small plastic cover. And one of each side at the bottom accessed by removing trim from the dash.

For the right hand screw (on a LHD car) - pull the long trim piece (mine is wood veneer) see photo. Use a plastic tool to get underneath and lever it forward - there are six clips that pull straight out. Easiest to start at glove box end. Simple plug to disconnect the switches and put it out of the way

The surround is held by a torx screw into the dash. This is where mine is rattling - easy to replicate. Reason - the plastic tab that gets screwed down was broken off the instrument cluster. And in fact wasn't even there so it didn't break off behind the screw - it must have been broken in the past and someone threw away the broken piece. See photo

On left hand side simply unclip the silver surround to the AC vent. Again just held in with clips - pull straight forwards using a plastic tool to get into the gap. That reveals a torx to hold the left of the instrument cluster. Also broken off and missing... see photo

So for now I got some foam and placed it behind the edge of the cluster where it rattles. And did the same on the other side just in case. Pushed back on the two trim pieces and all done.

Rattle is cured and only 10 minutes of work

I did look up replacement cluster surround - about $60. So I might replace if rattle comes back. But hopefully all fixed!

That definitely was an error by the technician on the airbag replacement. You should notify the dealer about that. I am really hating the fact that they can't perform these without multiple errors and causing other issues to happen.

Thanks HarryF. So - do you know if they have to take off the instrument cluster surround for the airbag recall? It's just the passenger side airbag and I thought they accessed it through the glove box? So I'm sure they would need to take off that veneer trim but can't see why they would need to remove instrument cluster. Any ideas? If they do then clearly their fault. But if not then I'm guessing this was a prior issue and it was wedged in ok but removing that piece of trim knocked it loose and it started to rattle

Either way I found a new Jag oem one on eBay for $40 so I decided to replace it anyway. Seemed like a low cost option to have it attached how it should be!

I don't think they have to remove the instrument cluster, however if they had a hard time trying to remove or put back the wood trim, they may have broken it.
