Intermittent Starting Problems
Just bought a XF 58 plate, 59K on the clock. No problems initially, started first time every time however, now experiencing intermittent starting problems. Some times it will fire up first time, other times it turns over for ages before it starts, hot or cold. Stopped for a brief moment the other day to dash into a shop and low and behold she wouldn't start on my return despite the fact it started first time on this particular journey. Took it to a dealer who couldn't detect ant fault, they replaced the fuel filter but to no avail.
Any ideas. Beginning to think I could have spent good money on this purchase elsewhere.

Having the same issue. If my key fob hasn't been inserted, it will sometimes say that it's not detected (other times it will start with no issue). But even when I insert the key fob, the car won't start.
I have a battery that's less than 2 years old, and an alternator of the same age from a previous issue where the old battery was leaking acid onto the alternator. If anyone has any ideas, it'd be appreciated. This is for a 2009 XF, btw.

The battery is in the trunk, and the alternator is under the hood. How did the acid get from the trunk to under the hood?
I am guessing this is one of those creative explanations a mechanic gives to someone not so mechanical as to why they need to be ripped off by having work done that doesn't need doing.

I remember reading something from the manual or here, where if its cold, and you get in the car, you have to wait a certain amount of time before the push start turns the engine, or it resets the timer..
or wait to see a blinking start/stop?
Ill post it here when I run in to it again.
It frequently happens to me, and I just chill wait a minute and try to start again..

Sorry, I meant the starter solenoid.
Thanks Guys for all the solutions.
fault found - turns out that if diesel is not presented to the injectors at a set pressure then the injectors don't open and she won't start. With mine th initial pressure was always low at start and would build up to eventually start after turning over for ages.
The culprit was a faulty high pressure fuel pump. Diagnosis and replacement cost £1200 !!
