Jaguar Chronicles entry #1

Model: XF-R
Year: 2010

So I'm slowly driving along a street in my neighbourhood, close to my son's school, looking for an available parking spot. I pass a fellow getting into his car to leave his spot but notice a free spot just up ahead so I decide to take the free spot. As I dial into R to parallel park, my side view mirrors angle into place, and I see in my driver's side mirror the same fellow getting back out of his car – his head now fixed in my direction.

Before I completely tuck into the free parking spot I see in the side view mirror this fellow closing his car door and start making his way to where I was parking as if he was being drawn toward my direction by an invisible beam – sort of like he was in a trance.

As he got closer, I recognized his face from the neighbourhood and so I turn down the window to say hello. Before I could finish dialing into P – there he is standing wide eyed outside my driver’s side door looking at my car. He says in awe, “Oh man, this is my dream car.” As he looked my XF-R up and down he continued, “I just had to come see it up close. My name is David by the way.” The conversation continued but in my in my mind, I couldn’t help but remain amused at the experience of having a grown man leave his car to walk over to me so he could tell me what a nice car he thought I was driving. This never happened with my Lexus. The experience reminded me of when I was a kid and I fell in love with my friend’s shiny, new bike – nobody else had anything like it anywhere close by. I remember being awestruck and entranced with bike’s cool colour and wicked tires. Evidently the XF-R has that same fun effect on grown-ups. I love my Jag!

Whenever a Jaguar shows up, everybody notices... :-)

On my way to a meeting, stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic. I’m in the right most lane closest to the sidewalk.

In my periphery I notice a slowly moving object keeping pace with my car as I inch forward in traffic. Driving along side me on the sidewalk is a city worker in his motorized vacuum cart – the ones that look like go-karts with a giant vacuum hose attached to them to clean the sidewalks. My XF-R has definitely caught his attention as he is continued to crane his neck to look at it as he avoided pedestrians on the sidewalk.

As I turn my head to look at the guy on the vacuum cart as he passes by he makes eye contact with me as he slowly rolls by and unexpectedly gives me an emphatic thumbs up while nodding his head in approval at my car. I couldn’t help but smile. He held the thumbs up as he drove on even after he passed by me. I love my Jag!

pab,

One of my favourite things about showing up in a Jaguar is the stares the car gets from BMW and Merc owners. I can only imagine the huff they'd be in if they knew just how well the XF-R performs. Cheers!

On Thursday I was out with a 458 and we did a roll on the highway from 60, I was very impressed with how the XFR did.

Back in Switzerland with the XJR...

One saturday afternoon I stopped in to the local supermarket to grab some steaks & some beer (i was heading to a BBQ) and when I came out there were two women standing at the XJR. They were probably in their mid 50's, well dressed, had a certain style about them, sort of the St. Moritz glam-chic, old money, very elegant, attractive, mature women.

As i'm walking up to the car they notice me coming, and turn directly towards me, the conversation was in Swiss-German, so i'll try to translate it.

Girls: (smiling) You have a beautful car!
Me: Thank-you very much, would you like to come for a ride?
Girls: Oh no, it's OK. (giggling)
Me: I'm going to a BBQ at a friends house, why don't you come along?
Girls: Oh, we have plans, our husbands are....
Me: they're not here are they? Come one, it's just up the road.
Girls: Oh, we would, but...can we? (asking other girl, who's looking at her watch)
Me: It's up to you.
Girls: Oh, any other day...are you local? Maybe we could....

Conversation went back & forth a bit more, got even more flirty, and a little dirty (as it does) but I was running late so I didn't have time to play, especially since I was married myself! LOL

Anyway, I bid them farewell, "maybe next time" and left them with a sad "we missed out" look on their faces, pulled out onto the main road, and somehow it picked 1st so I had the supercharger howling like a banshee as I passed them, they were waving goodbye with that sort of sad, dejected wave you see in the movies...

Great stories..especially Cambo351! Thanks for sharing!
I just love the head turns...people asking what kinda car is that? and many that stare at the grill to figure out what kinda machine this is!...and the respect I get from some of the American Muscle car guys when they see it!

My first proud moment was back two years ago, I had my car for one week. I took it on a 300 mile road trip to Alpine Valley, WI for a Kiss/Motley Crüe concert.

As I pulled into the parking lot to find a safe stop, I was slowly rolling past the crowd of people walking toward the venue, a guy yells out at the top of his voice "SHAGGUAR" and the whole crowd cheers. My friend gasp in awe and said to me "that has never happened with any of my cars".

Very proud moment.

I have had couples walking around my car in parking lots countless times over the last 2 years, pointing out features and complimenting me. It never gets old.

Doncha just Love it when people appreciate your car and tell you about it?!
It makes all the polishing, wrenching, blood, sweat and tears worth it.

Cambo351,

Love that story - entirely relatable. I know exactly what you mean when you described, "mid 50's, well dressed, had a certain style about them, sort of the St. Moritz glam-chic, old money, very elegant, attractive, mature women." Ah to be single again...Cheers!
