Default Jaguar XF 5.0 Review by Wide Open Throttle

I bought this car because I simply couldn't bear the thought of no more NA V8s for the XF lineup. I didn't want someone's used Jag, so I just couldn't help myself. Here's my entire review of the car. I compare it to the 2012 Audi A6 3.0T (another car I own), the BMW 5-series, E-Class, Infiniti M, and even a Hyundai Genesis 5.0 Sedan.

This was a great post by Arnold. Follow the link to this great review. The review answers most practical reasons and features that make the XF stand out above the rest. Sometimes it's not all math. There are a lot of posts from potential XF buyers and the answers are all right in this article. Its my experience doing the exact same thing and ending up with the same conclusion. However, I traded up my 2010 5.0 to an SC (screaming power/sleeper) and I prefered the bulged headlights of my 2011. It makes it stand out in a crowd. lol

Great review, you're pretty hard on the earlier models. Regarding the failure to pop-up of the gear shifter, the manual states that the function doesn't change if it doesn't pop-up, ie, you can still turn it to get into gear until the issue can be fixed. Not that one wants to be fixing this issue...

Oh really? I'm assuming you just need to get some grip on it and twist it even if it's depressed?

You should really educate yourself on the facts before publisher errors??

Ford did not damage Jaguar. If Ford had not purchased them when they did Jaguar would no longer exist!!

Ford poured hundreds of millions of dollars into Jaguar to bring their production techniques and factories into the 20th century. In fact Ford never made a dime from Jaguar and finally after 17 years of losses they sold Jaguar in 2007 to Tata.

Ford was nearly broke at that point and Jaguar was just a money pit they could no longer afford.

Clubairth1 is absolutely right. Ford saved and improved Jaguar and Tata is doing even better. So glad I bought my 2012 XF with the 5.0 NA engine which is no longer available.

+1000000000000

If it wasn't for Ford, Jaguar wouldn't be around today. They put some reliability back into those cars.

Agreed, I've seen a lot of Ford bashing on the site...and it isn't warranted.

I think Ford has a negative stigmatism, especially when speaking with Lux car owners. They feel that it is beneath them. Ford used to have serious quality issues but I think over all the NA car manufacturers FORDs are the best for reliability. I haven't looked at Consumer Reports recently but I do recall ironically that Benz and BMW having more issues and for that kind of money... you would think it wouldn't be that way.

Also remember that the XF, XK and current XJ were all designed under Ford ownership. They were already on their way to even more improvements when Ford sold them. If it hadn't been for the auto industry crash, I believe Ford would have kept Jaguar. Tata has given Jaguar/LR $3 billion and free range, which is the best Jaguar could have.

I would have to agree that the ford ownership didn't do much for Jaguar besides help them stay viable, yes the current models was designed while under ford but ford had no hand in the actual design process..The best example of Ford showing they have no idea WTH to do with a real luxury brand was the X-type, the chassis was ford, the engine was ford, interior bits was ford, it was nothing more then a AWD ford, there was nothing English about the X-type
Ford selling was the best thing they could have done bc if not jaguar would probably be in the same space as Lincoln is right now

Yup, worked internationally for Ford on small projects...and Ford brough him into Jag to fix the design of their cars...and he's designed everything since that we're all happy with.

For architected the whole thing...got them into F1 again too. I'm wondering who was behind the fantastic supercharged 5.0 l many of us have...

The 5 ltr basic engine was designed by Ford and is also used by Ford today in the Mustang. A great engine there too. The 4 cyl turbo engine in the Evoque is basically a Ford EcoBoost engine. I suspect Ford technology is still present in Jaguar, even though some will disagree. It will take a few generations for the Ford DNA to be purged.

I knew the smaller Lincoln LS engine was derived from the same family of engine as the 5.0, but I was under the impression the coyote 5.0 was a newer and Ford only design.

If anything, it would be the opposite. The 5 liter would be based on the 3.9 liter found in the LSs.
Two different engines though.

Sometimes i wonder, what would have happened, if BMW still owned JLR.

Sorry, two 5.0's in there, I meant to say the ford 3.9 and the Jag 5.0 were known relatives, this coyote (new ford) 5.0 I didn't think is a relative...
