K and N air filters
I heard that swapping the stock air filters on my 2014 XF to K and N airfliters have been known for hrowing a check engine light is this true? If not do u think its worth the 30 dollars each?
Thanks

I personally think the K&N Filters are way over rated. You have a supercharged V8 already....do you really need more power that the K&N allegedly provides? Your car already has two air filters and it was designed that way by engineers. Jaguar spent millions engineering the car so I wouldn't bother. Plus, do you want to deal with false check engine lights and a trip to the dealer?
If we were talking about an older Civic or Mazda that would be different.

I did it on my 4.2NA and 5.0NA XFs (just swapping the stock filters for K & N, not doing the whole unit change) and I thought it made a marginal difference in sound and possibly performance. I haven't bothered with the XKR because it is plenty fast enough, and plenty noisy enough too.
I didn't get any warning lights in either car, though.

They do increase intake noise a bit which I liked and they also have another benefit. I spend $60 on Amazon once, then wash them and spray a bit of filter oil every X number of miles.
Not sure how much the stock ones are but over the course of years it should be more economical. And to prevent issues, don't over oil them and let them dry overnight before reinstalling.

Two other risks: over oiling (can transfer to MAF, then bad fuelling and even codes) or under-oiling so particles get in (hey, the MAF again).
Rumoured in actuality on these cars to provide 1HP, though.

If you need to get a new air filter I'd say it's worth the upgrade. I've never had issues with them in my car or any car I've used them with. It seams like one person had issues a long time ago and now everyone jumps on the K&N hating bandwagon. As long as you don't dunk them in oil and then install them you'll be very happy with them.

I race quads and run k&n filters on all of them. You are not going to find a dirtier environment. I have dynoed many of them and of course depending on the air intake setup to begin with they gain between 5-15%. Now in a vehicle I do not think you will see that large of a % increase.
I am perfectly confident in their ability to filter. The only environment they do poor in is fine sugar sand, but I doubt you are driving your jaguar in the dunes anyway.
I run k&n filters in all my vehicles including my farm tractors. Like Kyanite said the advantage of being able to clean the filter will pay for themself in one use. Plus the intake noise is awesome.
Just use common sense when oiling them. It is easy to get good coverage with the oil without over oiling them and let them sit out overnight to even the oil.
Besides the rumored Internet gossip I have never heard of a verified k&n filter throwing codes. In the unlikely event a little oil got on the maf sensor a shot of cleaner would alleviate that.

Brutal, a jag tech that frequents this forum, recommended against K&N filters in our cars for several reasons. As did my local jag tech, so I pulled them out when I found the previous owner had them installed and replaced them with OEM filters.
Like I said, probably no real gain in hp, but sounds better and is cheaper over time. Plus, if I decide to do some maintenance and notice the filter is dirty, I just wash it and oil it. No need to go to the dealer and get the filters, so it saves time as well. And since I use them in my Infiniti and motorcycle, the cleaning kit works across all my vehicles.
OEMs spend millions of dollars trying to squeeze a few more HP or improve MPG. If there was anything on the table with a K&N filter, they would have grabbed it years ago.
I had it on an 04 XJ8 and it kept getting off an error code. Change back to OEM filter and all is good.
K&N has come out with a K&N Black filter that does not use oil. Don't know the chemistry of it, but I believe it was because of the sensitivity of the new cars.

Quite a few S-Type owners have had codes from K&N. As already posted jag techs like Brutal have seen codes, too.
Use at own risk, understanding the risk, and expect no measurable gains on these cars.
All this talk is silliness.. I have the drop ins in my 2011 xf prem and I haven't had any issues.. perhaps more gain and perhaps a better sound... for the cheap price i say definitely do it..
