Default Mass Air Flow Codes P1247 and P006A

Hi All,
not a new subject I appreciate, but following an engine replacement(Used 36K Miles) into my 2012 3.0L XF S (it through a con rod cap through the block at 62K -failed oil pump) I am now getting Restricted Performance and the associated codes above.

The chaps who did the rebuild initially said it was a MAF which came as part of the ancillaries from my original engine and was not covered under their guarantee. I have been down the road of EGR/MAF ec before with my XType 2.2D and so realise that a MAF indication could be manifested from elsewhere.
I have aired my unacceptance of this response as vehicle had only covered 1100 mile since rebuild.

Fair to them, following initial abdication of their ownership of the problem, they have now come back with the following:

we will take a look into your air mass sensors.
Please arrange to have your vehicle delivered to us. We will be unable to diagnose the issue while you wait.
As results while take time as the vehicle requires a minimum of 3 test drives exceeding 50 miles.
Unfortunately the vehicle will need to be left with us until we can diagnose, we would require the vehicle for at least 3 working days.

I have lost initial trust with this business as original quote grew by £2K, and I am looking for opinions on such an in-depth diagnosis. I have searched this forum ,and others, but have yet to see such a labourious diagnosis for what is a MAF and anticipate that once the vehicle is in their hands I will end up being told it was to do with my original bits and then being dropped with a bill for their effort.

I am aware that minute cracks in pipes, plastic ducting etc can cause this problem. I am an Engineer(Aerospace) and recognise that disturbed systems can induce faults. Furthermore cracks/splits could be a consequence of heavy handed reconstruction.

In sum, I think the problem is a symptom of rebuild, but moreover I am suspicious of such a labourious diagnosis.

Thoughts or some constructive comment would be appreciated.

MAF sensors can get gummed up or dirty (or at least the sensor wires can) and cause a range of poor running issues so the obvious first step is to clean them (the wires).
Use dedicated MAF sensor cleaner in a spray can (I use CRC brand), spray it on the wires, wait 10 seconds, repeat 5 or 6 times.
The MAF sensors on the 3.0 D are a little bit of a hassle to get at as they are just under the air filter box so you have to remove that box first.
See this page from the Workshop Manual:

Hi OzXFR,

thank you for quick response.
I have ordered some CRC MAF Cleaner of Amazon. Not seeing on the shelf at all local Motor Factors!

I am aware that this is a relatively quick fix( YouTube videos showing 30 mins ish) so I was confused by the rebuild experts quoting 3 days and what would appear to be some in-depth diagnostics.

I have looked at mine on the 3.0D and its attached to the Air Filter box and relatively straight forward to dismantle (Couple of Torx). I just didn't want to disturb the system initially, as I believe the problem may originate from elsewhere. I have read quite a few threads intimating cracked pipes/boxes which are throwing up the same codes. I am not a great believer in coincidence and thus curious as to the diagnostic approach given by Royal Rebuilds for what is regarded as a relatively quick fix by others on the forums.

Once again thank you for the good gen.
