need help - installed a OEM battery - car started but gear selector no communication
I changed my battery today only because the battery i had was not OEM - there was no pryor issue-
removed battery easy but installing a bit difficult the negative i had to hit a couple of times to sit in to terminal right- that may have done more damage - used chrome ratchet- not sure if i shorted - red connector was connected
- also negative wire has a black electrical connector connected to it not sure if i damaged it when installing or removing
after installing started car - car started but notice gear selector didn't rise and no light one it as well-
read code says lost communication with gear selector
had to force into neutral to get it towed
2012 jaguar xf 5.0 non super charger

-If it were me , I would disconnect the negative terminal from the battery and leave it whilst I have a cup of tea, then reconnect and see if that helps ?
- I think you'd know if you shorted negative and positive battery terminals you'd get a spark , probable burn mark on the ratchet.
- regarding the "black electrical connector" - what do you mean ? Can you see physical damage ?
I do hope it is not some module gone belly up. Did you wait a while for the car to shut itself down before changing the battery ? I must confess I have never thought about OEM for batteries ,personally, as long as they were "correct" otherwise. They're probably better- I know the original batteries in my cars have lasted longer than the replacements as a rule.

I'm not sure what you mean by "had to force it into neutral" but for future reference if you get stuck in drive, just remove the silver, plastic trim piece in front of the centre armrest/cubby. It just clips into place no screws etc. Underneath you'll find a lever with a short strap attached. Turn the locking screw on top, and pull the strap upwards. This unlocks the Park mode and puts the car in Neutral.

Think the black wire is the battery monitoring system connector. As suggested I'd disconnect it all, check that the cables and connectors are not damaged then try again after 10 mins to allow the systems to reset.
Should be no need to hit it. If the bolt is loosened it should go on fine
If not then pull the codes from OBD and post up here

That suggests that both the gear shift module and the transmission TCM are not communicating properly. So it's an issue with the CAN bus network. Most likely electrical related. I'd guess your battery is low (what's the voltage across the terminals) or has a loose connection (perhaps caused by the hammering on the terminal)...
