Default O2 Sensors...

So I bought a certified Used 2013 3.0 All wheel drive XF on Saturday the 16. It has the sport package and some nice options and just over 5,000 miles on the clock. I drove it some on Saturday and about 3 hours into ownership I get a service engine light... I figured it was the gas cap not on tight enough when the dealer filled it with fuel. Called the dealer to let them know and said I would bring it in on Monday.

So yesterday I take it to the dealership, and my dealer commented it might be O2 Sensors, and said Gas Cap... I was hoping gas cap at least. Well they looked it over and came to tell me I have one of the 6 O2 sensors was bad and needed to be ordered to be replaced.

Don't get me wrong I am not complaining, more just curious, how many on here have had failed O2 sensors? I had a 2003 XJ8 with over 100k on the clock with original O2 Sensors and I have had 2 Land rovers with way over 100k on the clock with original O2 sensors as well as 2 mini coopers in the last few years... what gives? Did they buy some cheap O2 sensors maybe a bad batch. The thing that bothered me the most was the dealer suggested it almost instantly but the service manager said they have only replaced 3 or 4 of them.

At least I didn't buy the Used Maserati I was looking at... it was out of warranty and O2 sensors for it are not even close to easy to replace or cheap.

Almost makes you think it had an O2 code before they sold it which they cleared hoping it would not come back!

Ha, I'm at the dealership right now they're replacing Bank 1 Sensor 3, I had just rolled over 3,000 miles when my check engine light came on. Mine is AWD too, I hope this isn't a common occurrence--and we're both in Ohio, how about that.

How easy is it to replace an 02 sensor? My CEL light just came on and the code reads as a O2 sensor, Im out of warranty now so was interested in tackling it myself (just spent $490 replacing the O2 sensor on my 2013 F150)

Easy or hard depending on whether "welded" in (they heat cycle).
Be sure to do the correct one and with a correct part, otherwise not special.

I've had my '13 XF V6 RWD for 2k miles and just had my Bank 2 Sensor 3 replaced... Also in Ohio. Dealer says he's never had to replace one before. Forgot to ask him who the part manufacturer is.

You're right about the bad batch. I've seen a few of those for the 2013 and up jags. it's a misbuilt o2 sensor. pretty much just replace it with a new updated o2 sensor. It's sensor 2 and 3 that are the misbuilt ones.

Columbus area. Interesting about the bad batch mentioned above. If the others go out, hope it's in the warranty period.

My 09 XF NA is at the dealer now having an O2 sensor replaced. I have about 60,000 miles on it and it is starting to reflect just about every common problem the 09's have - wrinkled dash near center speaker replaced, water pump replaced, transmission coolant lines replaced and now the O2 sensor(s). . . . but I still love the car.

I had an O2 sensor go on my 09 at about 10K miles. Never had a problem after. Traded in at 70k.

The water pump issue isn't common with the 09. Almost all of the water pump issues have been related to the 5.0L motors (2010+). The dash issue common on all the XF years.

A trans coolant line issue was posted by another owner. What was the problem? Was there a leak?

Yes, there was a leak at the connection. I also have an 08 XJ8L that has the same engine, same 6 speed transmission as the 09 XF. Both vehicles have now had the transmission coolant lines replaced.

Well, my CEL came on again, I'm at ~5,900 miles. I'm guessing it's the O2 sensor again, we'll see.

Ouch - but they shouldn't be failing. Look for a cause. Also look for TSB etc in case they know they've had a bad batch or something.

I wasn't able to find any TSB for it, but it's looking like it may have been a bad batch of them, I'd really just rather have them replace all of them. I guess if the light comes on after this fix I'll insist that they replace all of them, I'm not going to keep going back to replace them one by one.

I got a P0042 today. 15,000 miles. I'll update with the dealer correction when they finish.

Default O2 Sensor information

Hello, I'm fairly new to this forum, but I can bring some information as I work on all types of vehicles as a hobby and also a owner of a 2013 3.0 AWD. My check engine light came on as well around 7k miles. I ran the code and it stated that sensor 3 bank 2 heater is bad code p0162. to make a long story short I attached an interesting document.
