on a 2009 XF 4.2 NA premium luxury, how can i test the secondary air injection pump itself to see if it is operating. lately i've started getting cel with codes 0411 and 0491. A long time ago i got these codes but they turned off and cel turned off without reset, but now the cel comes on with these codes consistently.
2nd dumb question.....I found a 2-wire plug laying on garage floor in the area where I generally work on my cars. But it does not have any wires on it and where there would be wires, it appears to be sealed with green rubber, like a dummy plug. Are there "dummy plugs" on a 2009 XF for some reason and this mystery plug is leaving a circuit open?
To your 2nd question, there will be some 'dummy' plugs, particularly as you have the na car and the main loom is probably common with the sc version, however if there are no loops of wire on the dummy plug, it serves no purpose other than weatherproofing the unused part of the loom. There are probably other dummy plugs on your car that have a wire loop from one terminal to another, losing these will likely cause problems but a totally blank one is just a weather cap. You might get gremlins though if water gets into the unprotected place where it came from.
It's pointing to the secondary air injection pump. Is it working? I would find where it is on your engine and start with some inspections to see if anything looks wrong.

How can I tell if pump is working? With car running, I can't hear or feel anything other than the engine running. Here are pics of the mystery plug. And btw, not certain the plug is from this car. I have 3 cars that have recently been on stands and worked on in the same spot in garage.

update....I did remove the headlight for good view of secondary air pump and started engine. Put my hand on pump...it is running for a short duration 20 seconds or less. what's next in line to check? all the hoses and lines appear to be in tact.
Maybe get another pump? Your car is old and the plastic is decayed by now.
I would disconnect the pump to see if you get different error codes.
You have to let the car guide you to what's wrong by following the codes.
