Servicing
Im just thinking about servicing, I have an excellent mechanic I've used long term he's a personal friend and always looked after me. But I'm wondering if you guys recommend taking the car for its first (in my ownership) service ? If my mechanic services it does this keep up the service records or is that only if you go to dealer?
What your guys paying for servicing in main dealers? Any of you in SoCal?

By law you can take your car to any one you choose to get it serviced but you must keep records showing the service was completed, if required to enforce a warranty claim. The best place to start since your out of factory warranty would probably be that mechanic you mentioned.
Jag dealer service is not cheap. It will be comparable to Mercedes rates.

These cars aren't collectibles, so whether or not you have dealer stamps and receipts, your values will plummet every year regardless. So it's a much better idea to take the car to a mechanic you can trust than getting ripped a new one by the dealer.
What's your warranty situation?
If you are still under warranty (factory/dealer extended or after-market) then all servicing including simple oil changes really should be done by a dealer workshop or a kosher independent mechanic to preserve the warranty.
If you are not under any warranty (like me!) then you can DIY pretty much all of the basic servicing including oil and filter changes and save a motza. This is what I have done with only average skills, knowledge and tools and I reckon I have saved several thousand $ so far, and I have the added satisfaction of knowing it has been done and been done right.

My only add if you have an extended warranty would be to take it to someone with some experience in these cars to have the typical issues checked out. My dealer spotted and replaced the water pump before it failed as they could hear the rattle/chattering it makes as it starts to fail. Probably saved me a roadside stop - and warranty covered it
So I'd have someone check it all out thoroughly and use your warranty if needed!

What servicing are you thinking of? Oil changes etc? Scheduled time/mileage checks? Pretty hard to quotes prices without a definition. I've seen variations of over $500 depending on what's included.
Is your buddy familiar with these cars, or is he going to learn as he goes.
