Default Sighhhh..

Just got the car Saturday and already scratches on the car from lord knows what. 2 on the hood, one on the front bumper, and the rear bumper has what looks like a crack that hasn't really cracked yet. Somebody must really be a hater, I don't see how these scratches would mysteriously appear. The one on the hood is about 4-5 inches long. Any easy fixes for this?

If not I may just wait it out till I get the car wrapped in a few months.

If it catches with your fingernail its too deep to truly buff out (and those look too deep) however you can still polish it to wear it rounds the sharp edges enough to make them less noticeable.

Get some rubbing compound. They should disappear enough to the point where you can't notice them.

If you don't own a random orbital buffer you could rent or borrow one. Make sure it is the random orbital. They are around $150 new I think. I use it to polish out scratches, swirls, etc. these scratches look a little deep so they might not disappear entirely. Not sure what to do with bumper cracking. Is that chrome?

The bumper/paint? nah. It's strange, I have no idea where the crack came from, there's no indentation of it being hit or pushed or anything. And it wasn't like that when I took it from the dealership but whatever. I think I'm just gonna hold out until I wrap the car next month. Gonna wrap it in satin blue. I think it would make more sense to put that money towards the cost of the wrap rather than spending 150+ when I'm going to wrap it anyway. But thanks, it's good to know what to get if/when this arises in the future

Wow, such a shame, I feel your pain

Unfortunately, they look generally far too deep to remove totally, although some rubbing compound, perhaps black t cut followed by some Poorboys Blackhole glaze will certainly diminish them.

Some real idiots out there!!

Are you sure they weren't there when you bought it and just carefully covered over with some black pen that has washed off? Maybe I'm too suspicious, but it seems more likely it happened in the last few years...

The one on the bumper is a pressure crack. It looks like someone removed something from the trunk and dropped the corner of it on the bumper.

I doubt it, the 3 times I went to look at the car over the course of a month it only had the 2 blemishes I saw on it when we inspected the car, which were small (no big deal) scratches. I looked carefully over the car, not ruling out the possibility but I think it's unlikely. How those scratches ended up there though, I have no idea. I briefly skimmed over the security footage from my driveway and didn't see anyone touching it. So my only thought is maybe someone scratched it in the school parking lot that I park, but once again it's mainly teachers in that lot, students don't really go in there even though it's accessible.

Considering that I haven't put anything in the trunk, and that I've I had the car for less than a week, I would suspect someone purposely did it.

People suck. Here's what happened to mine a few weeks after I got it last year. They get an "A" for originality at least.

I got my XJL keyed a few weeks back, a double scratch on top of the trunk, all the way across.

Noticed that some posters suggested the use of rubbing compounds. I would be against that as rubbing compound is aggressive and will cloud the paint surface. I used a polishing compound to take the edges off the scratches but, they were deep enough where they are still visible on closer inspection.

To texsn95 - that is the worst vandalism I have seen for a long time. Glad you have a sense of humor about it.

Haha, it happened at my stepdaughter's high school on a Friday night, I drove up to meet my wife and twins at her performance, and after a bit took the twins home while my wife stayed. A few hours later, she called me as I was playing Halo, in tears and upset, saying the whole side of my car has been keyed. I just shrugged and kept playing and didn't look at it until the next day. I think this car was cursed from the beginning I didn't have any touch-up paint so I ended up using Ford Sonic Blue for a few weeks until I could get it into the shop. This is why I carry $250 comp deductibles on our cars.
