Sound Dampening Insulation? Pics inside.
Hey guys,
Thought I'd take off the engine cover as I was bored and done cleaning the car. Then I noticed the insulation or padding stuffed in some tight places.
Is this just to make it more quiet or is it for heat as well? Would it be better to leave the insulation off to get more air flow in those areas? I also saw some on the underside of the plastic engine cover as well.
Thanks!

How funny, I just noticed the same thing the other day when I cleaned mine. I assumed it was to insulate from heat given it was wedged under the supercharger. My kid joked at there being a drug stash hidden in the car for smuggling. Lol! I did think it was a little tacky looking; like a diaper jammed under as an afterthought.
We started seeing this in late 2007-2008 on the STR and Range Rover SC 4.2L engines. No real official answer but it looks like it's to dampen the noise of the older M112 blower used on the 4.2L motor.
They also started putting the ribs/raised patterns on the intercoolers in place of the older flat style. Again not sure why but people have noticed the different construction.
Does the 5.0L have this? I don't think so because the improved TVS blower is much quieter.
