Default Steering wheel shudder when driving HELP

As the title states, when i am driving and more so when applying the brakes my steering wheel is shuddering left and right. It just started happening and I'm unsure of the troubleshooting procedures on this as its my first jag.

Background on the car: 2010 xf premium 102k miles nothing else known about the car as it was purchased used and the dealer has no info on the vehicle.

PLEASE ASSIST ME

Can you give us more detail.

Does it shake badly at any speed or is it worse when driving at higher speeds e.g. at 50/60mph?
Does it shake more when braking or driving?

Sounds like the font rotors are warped. I would make sure the caliper isnt staying applied a bit causing excess heat that warps the rotor.

Also, check the tires for bulges and shifted belts.

No such thing as warped rotors (discs) what cause the shudder when braking is hot spots that have built up on the discs , if the discs have a lip on them replace . If not do the bedding in process

What size wheels do you have? If it's 20inch (or maybe 19) then likely to be a bent wheel if it happens all the time while driving
If it's a strong vibration when braking then it's likely the rotors. What people call warped rotors but as pointed out is just uneven wear. More pad material deposits on some parts of the rotor and as you brake it wears some of the surface more than the rest. Those small variations in thickness are felt through the brake pedal

Are you handy with doing work on the car? If so, you can save a good amount doing it yourself. Else find a well priced Indy.

If I were you if you don't know the history I'd replace all four brakes and rotors (aftermarket are v reasonably priced and it's easy to DIY if you have the right tools). Would also bleed and change brake fluid. Oil for sure (and use the right one - search on here). And would have the wheels checked for balance and alignment

Sounds like a lot but it doesn't have to be

Also - would have the cooling system pressure tested as the plastic pipes go brittle and fail - and an overheated engine can be death to these...

Sorry. Does excess run-out work better for you?

I am happy you came up with that. I was beginning to think I had dreamt of all the rotors I had turned on a brake lathe!

Run out on the hub will cause steering wheel shudder also.

Sounds like a warped rotor when applying the brakes seems slowly usually between 100 km and 80km you get a shake I bet . Usually a warped rotor if it happens when going around a corner then I would say a cv joint. Pray for brakes much cheaper

No, no, no. As per post #5 there isnt warpage on rotors.

Default Shuddering

Actually Rummy636 is correct usually uneven friction from the brake pads on the disc

Dealing with the same issue! Hopefully once one of us figures it out, the same issue fixes the other persons!

Agreed. Here in OZ we just call them knackered, LOL... hotspot... localised overheating of the disc causing that portion of the the disc to become different in its physical location and properties in relation to the non-hot spot areas... ie , warped , possible cracking, increased metal fatigue...no, not warped of course, (Or not "of course" if I'm not trying to be diplomatic) ...but hey...... still knackered.
Bedding the brakes is a good idea BEFORE you knacker the disc. Just saying !!

( realise we are resurecting an old post) Yeh, well easy rule of thumb is if your brake pedal vibrates its your rear brakes, steering wheel : front brakes. Do the usual checks for yourself- check brakes not binding ( calliper pins etc) . My personal experience is if rotors/discs are not somewhat new, good place to look.

Thanks! I think that’s not been checked yet. Hopefully that’s it as it seems like an easy fix.

This thread is all over the place, but I was ready to sell my car over the brake judder. I spent a lot of time and money trying to get it sorted, but when I finally replaced all of my suspension (worn out and degraded everything), all of the brake judder went away completely.

I may have to do that, as I've still not found a solution. Thankfully it's driveable, and I may have just gotten used to it but I don't notice it as much anymore. Got into a parking lot fender bender, so I haven't had my baby for about 2 weeks so far... Not great!

I thing I find is if you drive very easy all the time you do get pad debris build up and steering wheel shudder. My wife's car has this EVERY time I get into it to drive it.

You might just do some heavy braking to remove the pad debris? On my 2014 XJR it occasionally does this and a few hard stops cleans things up.

I try to do that semi frequently just in case yeah, but no such luck with it fixing it completely. Seems most likely at this point that it's the suspension.
