Just replaced the oil, and man did it need it. The other posts about it said it would stink, but I really didn't get how badly it would. It smelled like a mix between McDonald's old grease traps and vomit. It was also dark and sludge-y. Fortunately, unlike one of the other posts, I didn't see any metal (I put a magnet up to it as well). The oil you buy is nice and clear, but this is what my oil looked like when I pulled it out:
I used about 2oz and squirted it in and out in different areas as I could get to them. This is what it looked like with the old mixed with new to contrast the difference:
I really wish I was doing this as part of a thermostat replacement. The main hose there is directly in the way, and if I was able to remove it and had all the coolant/parts needed, this job would have been a cinch. I think from now on I'm going to recommend it anytime somebody posts about doing a thermostat.
When putting the hose in to remove the oil, you will feel something blocking the entrance. You have to wiggle the hose around until you feel it *give*, and then you can get in deeper. This is down and a bit to the left.
There's a corrugated, brittle plastic pipe that I thought was a wire cover... until it broke. Apparently it's an oil breather hose of some sort that disappears into the back of the engine somewhere that looks like it's going to be impossible to get to. So I repaired it with a short length of pipe inside, and shrink sealer on the outside. Hopefully that's adequate while I look for replacement (and how to do it).
The top, metal intake tube *Has* to be loosened at the front (I didn't fully remove it). Otherwise, you have no room to work, although if you had that coolant hose out of the way, it would probably make a big difference.
The fill point seems to be at the back of the supercharger, here's a pic (note that this is with the blower upside-down compared to how it's installed on the engine)
Saw this AFTER I bought the oil and syringe. I thought if I removed the wiper shroud I might be able to access the filler, but no dice. It simply can't be accessed on 2010+ XFRs without removing it from the engine... and I'm not going to do that while I still have an extended warranty in place. But what a sh*t design to not put a filler nipple on the front. Ugh. Well, I guess it'll have to wait until rebuild time (in another 50K miles).
The very first supercharged Jags (up to the X308 & X100) had a defined oil change for the supercharger, from memory it was something like 30'000 miles?
After that they became "sealed for life" otherwise known as "sealed for the warranty period"
Umm ... actually no.
The 30K interval was used by GM for the M90 as a recommendation.
I brought it up here and there was the usual big fight about the
infallibility of engineers and how Jaguar would never do anything
detrimental to the interests of owners.
Now it is not so controversial and owners regularly change their
SC oil without stirring up the usual "it's not in the manual" crowd.
