Default Transmission Oil Change

Im confused on weather or not I should change the transmission oil in my 09 XF SC. I've read on the forum where it's sealed for life and how there is no drain and fill holes at all, but that can't be possible. Won't the fluid turn dark and burnt? Or am I wrong? Pls help

The sealed for life mis-info is about 8 years out of date. Some of the S-type guys learned the hard way that the fluid should be changed at 60+K miles. The process for fluid and pan/filter change is well documented and can be done DIY if you're so inclined.

I think the "sealed for life" had the humorous subtext "for the life of your transmission" - as Mikey said, don't let he absence of a drain hole stop you. The ZF folks who make the transmissions rate the fluid at 75K miles I think, so there's your real answer.

Thanks so much, does any one know what specific fluid goes in the transmission?

You will have the ZF 6HP26 gearbox on an 09 XF SC, so you need ZF Lifeguard 6 trans fluid. There are cheaper alternatives which have been discussed in other threads but to play safe you should stick with the ZF Lifeguard 6.

Yes, it's all been covered many times over. There's several fluids that are equal to the original at a fraction of the cost, with much greater availability depending on your location. Most North American owners buy it at a local Ford dealer.

Nice to know. Just read through the F Type blown engine post and will be checking my oil level weekly from now on !!! What transmission do I have on my XF? I know its is still a ZF, but the 8-speed version. Can someoone provide a link to the threads that explain the how-to part? I was just looked at my service manual and didn't see trasnmission service in there at all. Is this a waranty service item or will it be out-of-poket? nothwere near the 75k miles yet, but she is tuned and I drive her hard.

Much the same as the ZF 6 speed, except you will need the ZF Lifeguard 8 fluid.
I dunno how or why it is different to the Lifeguard 6, but apparently it is.
Not a warranty or service item.

If things happen a bit like they did with the ZF6 (6HP26), Jaguar will add oil etc change info to TOPIx but may never add it to the service/maintenance sheet. (Pretty clueless, but hey.)

I found this about 8 years ago (for the 6HP26). Details of when to change on TOPIx, but nothing in the maint. sheets.
