Default Turn signals on the 2012 XF

I love my new XF Portfolio, I noticed that when you use the turn signals on the LED's go off and become an amber turn signal. I think this looks weird. Can this be reprogrammed by the dealer? I have searched but cannot find the answer.

Thanks

If this is at the front it may be connected to the DRL function. US cars do not have DRL active on delivery as far as I know but Europe and Canada do. Some research suggests that DRL should switch off when turn indicators are active.

Does this happen only on the side the turn indicator is active?

All of the Audi and MB cars behave this way in the US as well. They require the DRL to turn off when a turn signal is used.

I guess you need to be like everyone else and not use your turn signals.

During the daytime, the bright LED DRL turns off on the side that the turn signal is flashing for a turn. At night, both LED DRL's operate in a dimmed mode and do not turn off when a turn is signaled. The amber turn signals originate from multi-LED lights that replace the inner high-beam headlamps of the previous model years. The driving high and the low beams now originate only from the two outer headlamps.

One would think that it is designed that way for saftety reasons. If the DRL stayed brightly lit when the signal was turned on, wouldn't it be difficult for an oncoming driver to see your turn signal?

Yup, it's a safety feature so you can see the blinker. I doubt the dealer could change it but you could ask.

OK, I get it. But a buddy has an S5 that had the same issue and a software tweak was done to stop the "winking". He tells me that there is a company (Ross Tech, I think) that sells the software and an ODB II connector that is run through a laptop that can change certain settings in the car.

Otherwise, no turn signals for me!!!

Signal lights are for other drivers to know when you are going to make a turn. They are not for the person inside the car. So many accidents have occurred because of people not using their signal lights. I have a family member who is an EMT and he talks about how many people get t-boned because a car was sitting at an intersection thinking that a car was going straight by, but the car ends up making a left turn (while not using their signal) and the car that was waiting for the person to drive straight by ends up running right into the left turning (non-signal using ) car. So Chairman are saying that you are NOT going to use a signal light, simply because you don't like how it looks OUTSIDE of your car, while you're on the INSIDE? I may be misunderstanding you.

Ross tech is Audi specific. VAG Com software is basically the VW group's factory diagnostic software licensed for public use. You need to buy the "dongle" from Ross Tech and the software is then free. Useless without the dongle but free.

This is not available for any other brand.

For a fee you can get professional mechanic's access to manufacturers software. Jaguar will sell this to professionals.

Come on, you're just asking for a wreck if you make a conscious decision to NOT use your signals. Don't be like that...
