Default Valve cover mystery

On my 4.2 xf 2009, the valve covers have a stump with 2 wires (front of engine nearest to radiator) coming out it and I was wondering just what those are and should I replace if the plug on one is broken.

Kali,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to X250 forum. This is the place to post technical questions about your model.

A picture would be useful ......

I'm not sure which part you mean, is it this part?

Can you add a photo of the bit you are referring too?

It's the variable camshaft timing (VCT) oil controlsolenoid. That needs to work in order to supply oil to the engine properly.

Not quite correct, it needs to work to allow your camshaft timing to adjust.
