Default 05 XJ8L Alternator replacement

New to the forum, really appreciate all the information!!! Just bought an 05 XJ8L, beautiful car!!! Drove it home 2 hrs and then the battey indicator came on. Not charging. Understandable, 90K miles. I have worked on alot of cars in my day, but never a Jag! Is there an alternative to removing the motor mount to remove the alternator and if not can the motor be raised from underneath verses the special tool requiered to do it from above? Any "tricks of the trade" I should know? Going to put an aftermarket alternator on hoping the original can be rebuilt. Any concerns there?
Thanks again for the advise / ideas, I have used the v-bulletin forums for all of the vehicles in my "fleet" and always get great feedback.
Bob

Hi Bob
You need the workshop manual here; JagDocs, The Source for Jaguar Documentation!

Just pay (not many dollars) and download it.

Usually when an alternator fails it is just the diode

so if the bearings and brushes are ok you will be good to go.

cheers

The reason for the engine lifting tool is that on a shop lift with the car high in the air, holding the engine up from underneath is tricky. If you are in your garage and working on a ramp or jackstand, you can loosen the mount and hold the engine up with a jack . Just take apart what you need to. By the way, these engine holding tools are pretty cheap from Harbor Freight if you have to work high in the air.

An unusually early failure of an alternator, they are mostly very long lived, unlike suspension parts !

As it turns out it was not really the alternators fault for the early demise. The connector at the alternator was not properly seated with the "forks" situated in the right position. It caused it to have a loose connection and burned it out.

Hi. I'm planning on doing this over the weekend and getting the alt. rebuilt. I am just not looking forward to tackling on a engine mount removal. I have read there is a way to take the alt. out from the top. Honestly, even if it takes longer, this would be the way I prefer. Can it be done? This is also on a '05 VDP with 58k. What would be the likely pitfalls from getting it out topside?

Performed the alt. removal this Saturday. I actually had decided to do it per the JTIS, but my wheel was frozen to the hub. So, in the end, taking the alt. out from the top is doable, but way more time consuming than I had thought.
