2010 Jaguar XJ
#21
I can't say I really love the new look, it's kind of depressing that they are changing the design from the old XJ. But if you think about it, the design of the XJ8 is basically a 41 year old design dating back to the series 1 XJ6, so I could understand Jag and Tata wanting to come up with a new saloon. Jag no longer has a car who's design dates back to Lyons I suppose anymore though.

The 2010 Jaguar XJ has shed its retro skin to set a new course for the company’s flagship sedan. The future of the XJ will include a 510 HP supercharged V8, aluminum body, and virtual instruments. Also, it’ll look XF-ier!
Starting with the obvious, Design Director Ian Callum has managed to both underwhelm and surprise with this newest Jaguar. At first glance, it’s almost indistinguishable from the Jaguar XFR, taking much of the nose and sleek profile from the four-door coupe.
Upon further investigation the new XJ reveals a longer and more muscular profile, with a narrow greenhouse that slopes into an elongated and blacked-out C-pillar. The addition of a full panoramic glass roof adds another new dimension to the car. Whatever you’re feelings on the new design, it’s clear this is an almost complete departure from the previous XJ.
Mechanically, the Jaguar XJ isn’t quite as drastic a step forward. The platform is new, featuring a significant use of aluminum in the structure, but the first batch of engines will be a trio of the 5.0-liter Gen III direct-injection V8. The base XJ and XJL will include the naturally-aspirated version good for 385 HP and a 5.4-second 0-to-60 MPH jaunt. The XJ Supercharged and XJL Supercharged models will be fitted with the same engine supercharged for 470 HP and a 5.2-second time.
The new high performance model, perhaps a stand-in for the XJR or merely a placeholder, is the XJ and XJL Supersport models. This will feature the XFR’s supercharged V8 good for 510 HP and a 4.7-second 0-to-60 MPH time. All of these will get Jaguar’s six-speed, shift-by-wire transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddles.
The biggest upgrade on the inside, which includes the usual mix of wood, chrome and piano black surfaces, is probably the “virtual instrument” panel, which includes three round hi-def screens and no physical read-out at all. This allows the pods to adjust themselves to the driving conditions. For instance, if you switch into Dynamic mode the dials change to a red hue and bold the gear position indicator — which turns red as you approach the red line.
Specifications:
Base price $67,000-$95,000 (est) Vehicle layout Front-engine, RWD, 5-pass, 4-door, sedan Engines 5.0L/385-hp/380-lb-ft DOHC 32-valve V-8; 5.0L/470-hp/424-lb-ft supercharged DOHC 32-valve V-8; 5.0L/510-hp/461-lb-ft supercharged DOHC 32-valve V-8 Transmission 6-speed automatic Curb weight 4050-4350 lb (mfr Wheelbase 119.4-124.3 in Length x width x height 201.7-206.6 x 74.6 x 57.0 in 0-60 mph 4.7-5.4 sec (mfr est) EPA city/hwy fuel econ Not yet rated

The brake lights randomly used to stop working and then randomly start working again on my Jag. Also because of their design water is trapped underneath the taillight over the bumper, and if I allow it to collect the car would be all rusty. THAT SAYS JAGUAR...so lets hope these new ones don't.

I was hopeing the V12 would make a come back. Also why didn' they go with the taillights shown here?

The tradition is gone
The new XJ certainly looks good but they took out the J-gate, the enormous wood dash, and twin headlights. The new XJ should be named a different model.
Auto companies does change the styling every 5 years, so maybe in 2015 they'll revert back to the true Jaguar look.

See the thing about car companies is they are a lot like fashion designers.. In that, first you have to make something that everyone else thinks looks good. Then after you have a good reputation and following, you start telling people what looks good. Mercedes and Audi have been doing this for years. I personally think the last 6 years of Audi body styling looked horrible, but they have such a strong following that they still sell millions.. Jaguar just lost it's buyers to all of the new futuristic looking luxury cars, but after they win them back, they can start going back to the retro styling from the 60's and 70's.. I think a retro XJ8 with the styling of a 60's MKII and the interior of the new XF or XJ would be killer. Retro worked for Ford, GM, and Dodge, I'm sure Jaguar could pull it off just as well, but probably even better.

Our friends at Top Gear described the new XJ as having a booty bouncier than Beyonce Speaking of retro, this month's Car magazine had an article on upcoming Jaguars. Apparently in the 2013 or so timeframe they are thinking of coming out with C-Type and D-Types with upgraded parts. Not sure how this will pan out as there are numerous companies in the UK making replicas of them.

Oh WOW! I'm dissapointed. Why is it that car companies show you a concept car and everybody gets excited about it and then they screw it up. Then Ford and GM showed us concepts of the Mustang and Camaro, released the very cars that the consumer got all hot and bothered about, and sold some cars. I love classic design of the XJ. I think everybody does. Yes, I think it was time to make a drastic change to keep up with the times. I was excited when I saw the new XJ concept, but then they reveil this X(F)J that looks more like it could wear a Volvo badge than a leaper. Maybe it will grow on me....it would be better if it took my breath away like the concept did.

Maybe Ian put in alot of work in, on an Aston Martin SEDAN, and when it wasn't approved, dumped all the work here?
I would have guessed the front end would have just swept back the traditional XJ headlamps, in a similar manner to the Flying Spur or >'03e-class, albeit a more extreme "sweep".
Surely this design doesn't have alot of distinction from an Aston or maserati Quattroporte, it could even be an Audi or Benz for all a distant glance knows.
It is no doubt a very pretty car, just not nearly distinctive enough to carry the name as flagship.
I predict the body and roofline will stay the same in 2015, at which time they'll change the hood and headlamps to a much more traditional XJ look.
