2010 XJ Gearbox overhaul or replacement?
Hi everybody. Just bought a 2010 XJ 3.0. Within days it threw up a gearbox message and I felt as if I was driving a bag of spanners. The dealer took the car to the jag specialist garage who I'm told are now overhauling the gearbox. Seriously considering walking away as I feel that if anything the gearbox should be replaced although I don't know the fault codes. Is overhauling the gearbox a legit maintenance practice? Thanks in advance for any responses.
If the gearbox was making the noises that you were saying, then a rebuild is most likely needed as things were probably pretty chewed up. Granted, I would also expect there to be a few extra parts on the list like a new gear assembly as the teeth on the old set would most likely have been damaged. But, with this being said, getting a second opinion is always a good idea. Granted, if you had a short term warrantee with the car and the dealership is picking up the tab, you may have avoided a major bill and the dealership is just being cautious.
As for being overhauled or replaced, you are pretty much talking the same thing unless you are getting a brand new unit from Jaguar at a great expense. Most transmissions that you would get for this car are going to be rebuilt units (case of a 2010, lots of the internal parts will be from a 2010, but the software and some key vitals will be 2023 parts). Some times this is cheaper than having a shop rebuild what you have, some times it is not. Some shops are quality places and they trust their techs to do a good job and they question that of a major rebuilder. Some shops just want to get you in and out so they buy the rebuilds and just drop and slap the new tranny into your car. Pros and cons to both sides of this story.

I'm not in any of the photos - I was taking them.

You are close to the centre of expertise in the UK for transmission rebuilds - Mackie Automatic Transmissions in Glasgow. Jaguar Dealers don't rebuild transmissions - they send them the Mackie. If this is the 'specialist garage' your dealer is using, you need have no concerns provided the dealer is picking up the bill.
