Default xj x351 2010 5.0 V8 385 gearbox fault

Hello guys,

Today my gearbox displayed gearbox fault and goes totally crazy. After I deleted the error codes in the attached pictures it works fine but when driving agressive and pres kickdown it happens again. I suppose its electronics problem cause if it was a mechanic problem deleting errors should not solve the problem even temporary.

I had the same problem 2-3 times before this and last year but after switching engine off and then turn it on it solved it. Now the problem is permanent until deleting the errors and as I mentioned above its temporary solution.

the gearbox temperature was around 95 degrees i think its ok but i'm not an expert and the mileage of the car is 120 000km the gearbox oil was changed before around 18 000 km.

If anyone has had the same problem, I would be grateful if you could share how they solved it and which part caused it.

thanks in advance! regards!

I'm attaching the error codes

It does not look good. Possible transmission rebuild?
With the last fluid change over 100Km ago I would start with a full fluid/filter change.
Also has the fluid level ever been checked? It's not very easy to do.
If you can take a look at the fluid that comes out. Maybe get a picture of it in a clear container?

If those don't change anything I think you need to go to a transmission shop familiar with these ZF transmissions.
Since I don't think your in the US I don't have any suggestion about where to go for parts and/or service?

hi thanks for reply. maybe i didn't express myself correctly - the gearbox oil was changed at 105 000km the car now is nearly but under 120 000km. I mean it was changed and after this I made 18 000 km not mean it was changed when the car was on 18 000km total milage.

however its difficult to say I'm not sure that the gearbox filter was changed also when the gearbox oil was changed too. Many possibilities in the next days the car will be checked and gearbox will be opened by mechanic then if it isn't obvious what is the problem I will post photos and info. The strange thing is that after clearing and deleting errors the box works fine or almost fine and I'm not specialist in cars but if it works that way it isnt a mechanical problem more like electric device or connector cable I think? Or maybe I'm wrong ....

The 2010 Workshop Manual confirms your understanding of P2704-07 and the recommended action:

However, it does NOT list either P0729-07 or U0402-92 as Jaguar defined codes for your model year so I would be cautious about the total compatabilty of the diagnostics tool used.

Typically, when DTC's are cleared without fixing the underlying cause of the fault, they will return after a pre-defined number of 'trips' and not immediately the vehicle is started again.

OK sounds like the fluid is good then. Sorry about the distance error. Let's hope you find the transmission low on fluid as that could explain the problems but as Graham says above it's not unusual to clear everything and the car operates fine for a little bit before setting the errors again.

One thing to remember is all these modern systems like the ZF transmission "Learn" or adapt to the driving conditions the car encounters. That's great for the most part but this also masks the problems inside the transmission because it can adapt as things slowly go bad and/or wear out. So you see the symptoms that we do. Car operates fine then throws errors as things get more and more out of control until it can no longer adapt enough. Then it says hey we are not operating within the ranges we are suppose to and set's codes.

You then clear the codes and it starts all over trying to adapt to the current conditions until it can't.

That U code is a bit suspicious because U codes are network related which means connections and/or wiring problems. Your 6 speed is well know to have the sealing sleeve leak. Just about every 6 speed will eventually leak at that point. But the part is less than $20 and ZF redesigned the O-Ring package so they are now a different color so the field can tell the new from the old parts.

This is normally changed when the transmission is serviced and the fluid/pan are changed. In fact it can't be changed unless the pan is off the transmission. Was yours changed at the last service interval?
If not you might have a leak there that is getting into the wiring causing the U code?

I have same issue. Did you end up finding out what the issue was? I know this is old, but I really need this fixed. It's happens to me on the freeway, and I'm not even driving aggressively. It's pretty dangerous.
