Default unusual gearbox fault?

I got into my 1998 XK8 on Saturday to go to town and suddenly the gearbox just went. The red light came on and 'gearbox fault' was shown on the display. It reversed back into my driveway with no difficulty but it would not move forward!

Last night I thought I would double check just to make sure it wasn't a bad dream and it was perfect, no light, drove perfectly for about 30 mins and again the light came on.

Anyone have any idea what the problem could be? The gearbox isn't making any unusual noises and therre was no signs of a problem building up.

Thanks in advance!
Chris

Try to read the codes before you do anything more with it.

I finally got around to checking the codes, it read P1722. Does it sound like a mechanical or electrical problem??

it cost a bit but not as much as I expected. I did most of the work myself with my father. The only problem was the transmission oil. Jaguar Ireland were looking for $800 for 6L of oil but got it eventually from a supplier for $240 for 20L. In total I spent $1000 but a lot of time fitting due to all the original bolts being seized and taking forever to remove

I thought the ZF capacity was around 10 litres - is this Esso ATF LT 71141 liquid gold just available in 1 litre or 20 litre packs?

I don't want to start a huge transmission fluid debate, but I see no reason to use the $800 Jaguar fluid, unless maybe you are just trying to keep Jaguar from going out of business. There are lots of threads on here about alternative fluids that cost just a few dollars per liter and meet all of the same specs.

The proper ZF fluid can be found at much cheaper pricing...you just have to know where to look.

The CTSC - California Transmission Supply Company...sells our ZF fluids for about $ 16 a quart. You buy from them...the fluid is shipped to you directly from ZF. At least that's how they shipped to me last week.

Here's the link: The CTSC - ZF Transmission Fluids

Good luck.

I searched this entire island for the fluid and could only get it from two places, Jaguar Ireland or a lubricant supplier. It was available from Jaguar in a 1L and 5L and the independent supplier had 20L only. I priced alternative fluid but worked out slightly more expensive!
