KingRT, can you drain from the bottom. YES. I did it twice. The issue comes that you are looking at an additional hourish of time because you have to remove the whole under plate to access the drain plug. Not a difficult job, but you are going to be paying a bit extra unless the mechanic is willing to do things on this own time.
As for amount of oil left in the engine from sucking it out I think is very minimal compared to how much oil you are putting into the car. While I haven't measured it, looking at how often I have to empty my can from oil changes, I am getting pretty much getting everything out that I am putting in.
As Thermo points out above, unless you're having the gearbox serviced at the same time requiring removal of the undertray, the engine oil can be changed by using a suction pump.
Make sure the shop uses the correct oil filter housing tool to remove the cover as it can distort or crack.
Also make SURE he puts ALL the bolts and screws back in!! There are quite a few and I have also drained the oil from the bottom but it's not necessary.
I find even the dealers leave stuff off because no one can see it. Every car I have put on a lift has missing fasteners. Might just be better to service it from the top like Jaguar recommends?

KingRT on your response indicating you had an oil change and wipers for $80. The oil speced for our engines is not just a synthetic, it is a special formula and, IMHO, should not be substituted.

Basically if you open an engine from a regular car or even previous Jaguar's, you will find that oil naturally cooks on to many surfaces.
But it does not matter. These engines are fairly low tech when it comes to oil.
Your Jaguar engine get amazing performance (low end torque) by doing things with oil that no other manufacturer does.
It’s like a Swiss watch of delicate parts. The patent above is for a small pin that slides in and out. Oil moves this pin. No other engine in the world other than JLR and Ford have it.
What do you think will happen if you use oil that cooks quickly (becomes coke). Where after you turn the engine off you have heat soak.
Your engine is not built the same as other engines.
It needs just 3 things from the oil.
1. Good cleaning abilities
2. Ability to clean after long term use.
3. Not leave too much deposit.
Now you can become an engineer and figure out the perfect oil, or just use the one their engineers already blended. (WSS-m2c925A)”

Lastly, in the owner’s manual it reads “Castrol is "recommended" oil. WSS-m2c925A is the REQUIRED spec oil.
I have a 2014 XJ. My local Jag mechanic (not a dealer) charged me $106 for the filter & labor and I brought my own Castrol Edge WSS-m2c925A spec oil that I purchased on eBay. He drained it from the bottom and is quite familiar with removing and putting the tray back on. He feels it's the right way to do the job.
KingRT, unless your mechanic put in the right spec oil as pointed out by XJsss above, I'd get it out of there before you damage that engine. If he did put in the correct oil, I'd love to know where he got it. Only Jag dealers typically have it and they buy in bulk by the drum.
Just be sure that if you pay the super expensive dealer price for the magic juice that he actually uses the correct oil!!
Here was my story and I took it all the way to Engineering in the UK before I could get the dealer to change it again using the correct oil!!
