I have read through the forums as best I can. I have contacted everyone on the internet I can find. I can not find a solution for a 16. 2010-2015 seems to be no problem. 2017- seems to already have it. But, if you have a 2016 what do you do? I have purchased 3 units from Ali express or internet vendors. I have attempted (with help) to install. If I try and install behind the screen, the plug is wrong: I have a red 10 pin power connector. They all use 32 pin.
I have also called the dealer who say they have no way to upgrade a 2016.
The most recent purchase, which I have currently, supposedly installs in the trunk I cant find any videos to support this. Im scared to attempt with zero guidance, and not speaking Chinese leaves me at a bit of a loss trying to decode the messages they are sending me and make sense of them. Can anyone help with guidance on what to do? Hoping for an answer other than give up or convert to the Carplay factory unit. This is the schematic they sent me.
You can retrofit a stock 2018-2019 head-unit. It's the cleanest option; it's also the most challenging as it requires a bit of coding for the car along with sourcing all of the parts.
Your other option is an Android overlay, which is what you have. I did that initially with my 2016 as well, before having everything needed for the retrofit. (I am also happy to sell you the Android unit that I have for about half of the cost new).
As you have found, the 2016+ is different in that the module for the infotainment system is in the trunk. You have to run the harness to the back left of the trunk, and you will also have to use the auxiliary audio (3.5mm "headphone" plug) in the center console.
Its not so bad. I have an overlay unit and love it. One of my top 3 mods. So far.
It takes a little finicking to get the wore thru the trunk/cabin wall. After that its a breeze. I'll be glad to provide a picture of where I passed mine.
Sorry, it was years ago. I don't even have the same Aliexpress account anymore. If I can manage to remember my old log in credentials... then I'll gladly do so.
So. After researching even more, I had narrowed it down to two possible routes:
1. Get my current box from ALIEXPRESS working
2. Purchase a complete unit that included the climate controls as well as the radio
I found a local installer that agreed to try option 1. They didn't realize the tuner was located in the trunk, but figured it out and carplay now works seamlessly. No switching anything, automatic connection when I turn on the car. Install was 275, and the unit itself was 175. 450 total. They offered a solution if mine didn't work for 899. So, for 1/2 price I have exactly what I wanted. Hope this helps someone.
