3G Shutdown Effects
Reports are beginning to circulate about the major carriers shutting down 3G services as faster services become available. Has anyone seen anything official from JLR on how our remote start / OTA system updates and other features will work going forward? It's time for me to renew my Incontrol sub, but based on all of it working over 3G I'm not sure it's worth the investment.
My '17 XF retained traffic updates with a Verizon 4G sim card in the trunk..
For $20/month you'll get unlimited 4g data.
You'll need to activate any old 4G android tablet and simply move the sim to the trunk tray.

Hi 12306Jaguar,
It is not so simple: The hardware on XJ are build with 3G radio technology, and will only make connection with 3G modulation/fregrency for the 3G network, even you add 5G SIM in. The SIM are only your agreement ID for your selected provisioning, not a radio technology itself. (ie adding 4G SIM on to old Nokia 2G era phone, will not make it working with 4G network)
If and when the 3G network are shut down the comminication from the vehicle will stop.
Moving from 3G to 4G (or 5G) need actual hardware change, its not someting what can be upgraded by firmware or software. (unless the actual hardware modem support it and it have been just limited for 3G)
As far i know the radio comminication module are soldered to the PCB. An changeable miniPCIe or M.2 expansion adapter used on most laptops would be easy peasy, but more expensive desing for manufacturer. Only possible solution what i can imagine are that Jaguar make upgrade to the QNX operating system running dash infotenment, for accepting external USB-modem dongle. That will take one USB port, and will not be very elegant solution, but it is hard to see any other reasonable way.

Jaguar customer service emailed me this response... "Our team of engineers are currently working on a solution to the eventual 3G sunset, but they have yet to announce when or what form that solution will be. We will be notifying all affected vehicle owners once the issue has been solved. Our apologies for the inconvenience."
I spoke with JLR Customer Service and was told they are aware of the issue. I also contacted AT&T’s connected car division and was told that it will still work but it will be noticeably slower. They also said to get a updated radio from JLR 😂😂😂 if I wanted 4G connectivity.
