The color change on the center console from black to purple over time can be corrected by apply a high quality piano black. Apply to the center bezel as well as the center console to achieve a perfect match in color.
Hi Meanbugga - on this occasion I had a paint shop apply a high quality gloss black paint. I did however apply vinyl to the chrome section of the center console to reduce glare from bright sunlight while driving. (can be removed latter if not required)
I definitely like the idea of using vinyl for this job when I need to do it. Paint can get scratched easily and it's a pain to repaint. Vinyl can easily be reapplied. With a heat gun, the vinyl would be easy to wrap around the corners.
I tried wrapping the upper console bezel and it was not easy. Even with heat gun and patience, its a lot of curves and recesses that my inexperience could not overcome. Ultimately I painted the upper bezel to match the vinyl wrap I did on the lower "blue" piece and its underlying chrome component.
Since I wanted all the reflective surfaces gone I also painted the shifter bezel, and got rid of the "Tron" lighting in that piece while I was in there. Wrapped the e-brake lever.
I wanted a black matte finish vs gloss. Even with my efforts so far, there are still enough shiny bits in this interior to make an '86 Cadillac jealous. My overall goal is to get the chrome bits down to only the surfaces that are regularly touched. Accent chrome is so last century.
Obviously the British, who have never seen the sun, decided that a mirror was the best center console design for a car with a glass roof and a very fragile sunshade and visors. Wrapping or painting the console in a non-reflective surface is an excellent mod.
