Default Cooling fan in Infotainment system

Hello team,

When the car wakes up via opening a door and the Jag logo appears on the infotainment screen there's a fair amount of ticking and whirring noises coming from it. Sticking my ear up close to it I'm suspecting the cooling fan might be on its way out. It's steadily been getting worse as the weeks go by. A quick google image search it looks like there's a fan located at the bottom of the brain box behind the screen. Rather than fork out for a replacement box, if anyone has a broken unit they wouldn't mind parting with or can tell me the dimensions, voltage etc of the fan, I'd be most greatful ☺️

I have worked on this system and it's hardly mentioned anywhere? Surprised you have a failure too?

The fan and duct assembly are located under the steering wheel. There are separate ducts to the back of the navigation stack and to the back of the IP in front of the driver. This fan and system are PWM controlled so the fan can run anywhere from 100% to 0%.

That post is buried in a giant thread and is hard to find.
Please see my next message as I will re-post my original since it's detailed with pictures.

OK that changes things! I had the car apart so never powered up the AC to check if there was airflow. So your in uncharted territory here?
Maybe there is something in the shop manual? Now you have me wondering if I have any air flow out those ducts?

After some time researching this I have found a little bit of information but the entire system seems to be unknown?
Here is a diagram from the shop manual showing the instrument panel cooling ducts.

Now note item 4 as it's called an Instrument Panel cooling fan. So maybe just airflow with no additional cooling/heating?
I think you need to get the car hooked up to SDD. There are several or more codes associated with that cooling fan.

Here are 3 possible errors. Note what I underlined in red. Possible broken ground wire.

It's called the instrument panel cooling fan but look at the duct going to the right from behind the IP. I "think" that is the vent that blows on the back of the Navigation/HVAC center panels that is getting hot on your car. Finally found the part number too!

This is C2D7495 and I have found them used on EBay for under $100 including the ducts.
Here is an actual picture of the assembly.

I also found just the blower on EBay used for under $50. With the lack of information on this blower it must not fail very often so I would be OK installing a used part.

Here is a description of how the system works and note the mention of the 10A fuse in the CJB (Central Junction Box).

Since you have installed an aftermarket center screen note the following in the above paragraphs!

The TSD (Touch Screen Display) MUST send a signal to the IP to control the cooling fan BUT you have removed the factory TSD and replaced it all with aftermarket. I don't think you can fix this problem and it's just one of the things you lose with that kind of replacement. I think you will have continuing heat problems until the unit fails completely. It's just how electronics work and Jaguar would not have installed such a complicated and expensive system unless it was needed.

Again I recommend the Merryway unit over the other big screens because it requires you to install 2 boards from the factory front end. This keeps EVERYTHING working that was in the stock XJ. This was an absolute requirement for me when I consider upgrades.

Now one hail mary pass to fix this and it would be a hack suggestion? Just wire the blower to a 12V source so it's always on anytime the car is on. Only problem with that is again note the blower is a variable speed blower run in PWM over the CAN bus. You no longer have access to any of that. I don't know what the fan would do if just wired straight to 12VDC 100% of the time? Might be worth a try?

The above post is a bit confusing but it's from a giant thread on adding the large Android tablet to the dash.
I thought it would be better to see the entire post?

Somehow i have in my mind that the centre display module dont have a fan, instead it will get airflow from instrument panel cooling fan thru went 2 on clubairht picture? The DVD player (media center unit IAM 2.1) bellow centre display have a fan inside. I have one IAM 2.1 on my shelf for a instant change in case somebody local mess up the map upgrade. I can open it up and write the fan model up here.

I don't suspect it's the blower fan that keeps the instrument and infotainment modules cool, but I am tempted to replace it all the same. Reason is because the noise seems to be coming from the bottom and front of the infotainment modules when I stick my ear up against it. There's definitely a fan located on the bottom of this module and yes I'd be most grateful if you could open it up and write the fan model and perhaps some basic specs like its dimensions so I can try and find a duplicate replacement - thanks! 🙂

It's this fan in the above I'm suspecting, on the module itself.

Like i wrote, i dont think the display module have fan installed, even the frame have openings. (not 100% sure, but its very easy to remove from dash for checking)
The Media center / DVD player IAM2.1 unit sitting right bellow the display defently have a fan.

Just opened IAM2.1 unit i have and the fan type on is: SEPA MF40J-12A.
By quick search the fan seems to be sold with correct connector ready on wire.

Sorry to bump an old thread but AllData isn’t helpful.

How do you GET to this fan? Trying to pull the trim that just covers the lower steering column will quickly find you with most of your interior yanked out.

I can’t seem to be able to contort correctly to remove the damn thing. Mine as gone out…

its hard for me to photograph (I’m 6’4” 200lbs so getting down and up there to see is hard). I know where it is. I can get my hands on it. I just can’t seem to figure out how to unbolt it. The problem is the lower steering column panel cover thing has to come off - which would expose the part, I believe.

To get that off, according to AllData, the rear climate controller thing has to come out the center console so you can pull the LONG trim panel that locks the cover panel that needs to come off in place.

I am usually pretty good at figuring out how to “work around” to get to things but this little guy has me stumped

Sorry I can't remember what I did as this was something that I discovered when doing the Android screen install. So I had the IP and all the center stack removed as well as the side panel on the console so I could run my USB connection into the center console cubby.

I found another diagram in the shop manual but no removal instructions.

I did see mention of another fan as we have had people chasing a fan noise from the TSD (Touch Display Screen) in the center stack. I did not know that there is a fan depending on what type of screen is in the car.

Hey Kevin,

Yeah, I keep getting a fan related TDC and there’s this annoying little “vibration” that only goes away when you rest your finger on the trim that surrounds the gauge cluster.

Super weird.

Anyway, I got a new fan with ducting off EvilBay. I was going to try and clean the OEM one etc and whatnot before the “new” one showed up but I can’t be bothered to rip it all out twice.

When the new part shows up I’ll pull it all apart. I seem to be the guy on the forum that has all the strange stuff fail. LOLOL
