Our X351 models aren't rated for towing, so no one makes an aftermarket hitch receiver for them. I wanted to haul my mountain bike around but couldn't suffer a trunk mounted bike rack tearing up my paint, so I designed in CAD, built and installed a custom hitch receiver for my XJ.
I'm well aware of the risks of installing this on a car that wasn't designed for it, but each thru-hole is penetrating through at least 1/4" of aluminum and secured with a coarse-thread locknut and 2" fender washers. I feel safe carrying around a few ~35# bicycles, but I won't put on a ball and tow a trailer with it- hence no provisions for safety chains on my receiver.
While I was trimming the undertray I discovered a slight rear diff pinion seal leak... joy.
I found this hitch a few years ago on eTrailer made by Curt. I notice it isn't listed anymore but here it is for design reference. Incidentally, nice fabrication work!
