Engine/Trans Icon
The engine/trans icon is (solid)on in the 2016 XJL. Checked engine oil - its OK.
The old trick - on the 1993 - to reset the Check Engine light was to disconnect the negative battery wire for several seconds. Tried this today, but not luck.
I do know this trick only worked if the cause for the check light had gone away.
Would this trick work on the 2016 if the initial cause for check light no longer exists?
Any other thoughts before I make a trip to the dealer which is a 9 hour round trip drive.
TIA, Joe

Yes, the Check Engine light on the X351 will extinguish if the fault was temporary and sufficient time has passed. But why not at least have a general idea of the fault? Stop by your nearby big box auto parts store, and they will read the codes for you. The resultant codes will probably not be as specific as the dealer's reader, but should give you a clue to the source of the problem.
Or you could buy one of the dongle scanners several posters have reviewed here. They can provide very specific trouble codes, clear them, and provide the ability to reset the service light.

Impossible to reset?!?
I don’t know the answer to this but I have wondered; I’ve also read about disconnecting the battery for at least a half a minute to reset the computer but is not every XJ from 2013 and on equipped with a back up battery which is designed to prevent the computer from losing all its settings?!? So would that not mean that disconnecting the main battery would have no effect?!? If someone knows the answer please pipe-up!

No backup battery. So nothing is saved. Now for the start/stop system the early cars did use 2 batteries.
But the second small battery just keeps the car alive while the engine is stopped.
Yes please post back the codes you get and be sure to have them clear all codes. We need to know if these are current codes or just old ones from long ago that don't mean anything now.

Went to O'Reillys today & had the codes read - three were old, 2 for O2 sensor & 1 fuel cap. The most recent was for fuel cap. All were cleared & everything is fine again. Lets hope it stays that way. Thanks for the guidance here - this is the first car I have had which can have codes read.
